Let's not get crazy. Apple makes a great smartphone. But so does everyone else, now. So the only way to combat this is to sue everyone on earth.

I agree. Apple does make a great smartphone. I won't take that away from them. But they're resorting to anti-competitive practices now. Apple needs to chill. I could see if sales numbers were down but come on. They know their products are gonna sell anyway. The sheep aren't going anywhere and the iPhone is available on more carriers than ever. Hell T-Mobile is even refarming their spectrum. Apple has nothing to be worried about honestly. iPhone sales are their highest and will continue to be.
HTC and other manufacturers need to be more care...

Apple's also suing HTC for refusing to license essential technology patents under FRAND terms.
These aren't at all the same things. Apple isn't afraid of competition, they just don't want lazy competition using them as an R&D department.
Though Apple's definition of R&D is different than ours.

Apple sued HTC for a patent infringement on a method to display multiple options to the user when a number was selected (call/test/save/etc.). It was a couple lines of code that was found to be infringing, not "guilty of ripping off their design." HTC also corrected the issue months in advance of the release of the phone, to which Apple tried to (and succeeded for about a week) in getting an injunction stopping the sale of those phones until they could be checked over for compliance...which they were found to be.
