IMHO, the OS should receive updates throughout the life of a phones contract. Since WP8 apps are not backwards compatible with WP7, you're just pissing off the few customers you have that had been the biggest proponents of the platform.

They could have at least done a reduced functionality release like Apple does for the older devices. Sure your giving them 7.8 to provide some UI enhancements, but that will not be compatible for Apps written for WP8. So will developers need to create WP7 apps and WP8 apps? Or just build to the lowest common denominator and not take advantage of any new API's or features available in WP8? Either way, bad form and makes you think twice about buying into the platform. Nokia 900 just came out, the fla...

Well, the decision was made to swap out the core of the OS. AFAIK, there's simply no way to do that and make it backward-compatible with old hardware. This is a lot like the move from 6.5 to 7 in that regard.

Adding a compatibility layer to the new OS for old software is possible, and they're doing that. That's a big deal and a great thing. They didn't do that when they went from 6.5 to 7.

I think it's the right move. They'll get a lot of benefits over time from having their phone OS use the same core as their desktop and tablet OS.

Also, to be frank, the installed base for Windows Phone 7 is small. If they had 100 million users, it would be a big problem. But they don't. That's the problem, and a good reason to make a big be...

You've stated a few good points. But, people with anit-Microsoft feelings, need to realize, current WP7 phones will most likely get a few feature upgrades and enhancements, as well as start screen upgrade.

From what I've read, the apps will run on current phones but, some features will be limited due to hardware. At least, that's how I understood it. Anyway, to see Microsoft put effort into an update that allows as many features as current hardware will allow, is a great thing!

Even if you have just purchased a WP7 recently, your not going to be ass out or upset, if you have truly enjoyed what WP7 has to offer. You will still probably enjoy your phone long after Apollo launches and until you upgrade again.

Also keep in mind and you...

That's how I read it, the phones are being updated but they aren't getting Windows 8, instead they will be getting updates to Windows 7 which will add as many of the Windows 8 features as they can without breaking the hardware....so the owners of the old hardware are not being forgotten or left behind....

Speaking frankly, that is far more than Apple or Google are willing to offer....

You buy a brand new, top of the line Android phone on its first day of release, and you might never see a single update....and Apple cut off the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G from updates shortly after those phones were no longer offered, tons of people bought an iPhone 3G in April 2010 only to be cut off from all future updates in June....

They didn't say that it isn't going to get updates, in fact they said that it IS being updated to 7.8, which brings many of the changes of Windows 8.....but it is not being updated to Windows 8....

So it isn't getting Windows 8, but it is getting an update which brings as much of the Windows 8 features as the phone is capable of handling....

All in all....not a bad compromise if you ask me.....
