while i don't know exactly what people might do with this today, i do think this is very creative and i'd expected to become important in the future.

They did not mention but i wonder if the is feature might help radio reception in the future. If the radio knows where it is going then it and the base station might be able to best optimize the link quality.

As opposed to the handset having to distinguish between towers? That's actually a good point. As for the whole shaking thing...uh, I'm not exactly expecting that to take off.

CDMA networks already do this. It is based on the time stamps from transmission on the handset to reception on the tower. It turns up or down both the tower's signal to the phone and the phone's signal to the tower.

When the phone recieves a signal it has no way of knowing which direction it is coming from. Cell phone signals are not directional.

But GPS signals give away location. All CDMA handsets sold must be GPS enabled.
