These plans are not for everyone

These plans are not for everyone. Some people could benefit greatly from VZW's Share Everything plans.

Example 1:

2 Smartphones - Currently on a 700 min share plan, unlimited texting, both with unlimited data (use less than 4GB total), 4G tablet with 2GB plan, use about 1.5GB)

$69.98+$30+$30+$30+$30=$189.98

New plan: 2 Smartphones, 6GB data, 4G tablet

$40+$40+$80+$10=$170

Savings: $20/month

Example 2:

1 Feature phone - 900 minute talk and text plan, no data

$59.99+$20=$79.99

New plan: $30

Savings: $50/month

Example 3:

2 Smartphones, 2 feature phones, 1 MBB, 1 4G tablet: 2000 minutes, unlimited text, 2GB data on smartphones (one uses almost 2GB, the other only half a gig, none on feature phones, 5GB ...

I'm sure that somehow some way Verizon and others will justify this insane pricing strategy. I've been waiting for months and months for this family share thing to come out, and I find out the details today and this is nothing but a sham. I have a family share plan with 4 phones total, 1 being a smartphone. When my wife added that phone (iphone), we had to save $30 a month in other expenses in order to justify that increase. As of today, if I myself wanted to upgrade my own cell phone to a smartphone, I could add the $30 plan and guess what...each one of us would have 2GB of data to use for $60 per month. OR, I could switch to this "family share" joke and I could get 2GB for us to "share" for the same price. Which is the better deal? ...

Your bias is unreasonable. I said they don't care and that was me being nice about it. Verizon. Does. NOT. Give. A. *&^%. About. It's. Customers. They are ALL about the bottom line. As they should be. Don't piss on me and tell me it's rain. Just admit the truth.

You're right they are all about the bottom line. So is AT&T, Sprint, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, HTC, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, McDonald's, Toyota....the list goes on and on....at least this is possibly a good alternative to an across the board rate increase. Would you rather they just raised all their prices without giving you a different option? At least you have options. You can stay with the device and plan you have. Or, you can buy a phone at full retail. Or, you can pick one of the new plans. Or, you can go to another carrier. The choice is up to you (and when i say you, i don't mean Jarahawk specifically...so don't think I'm singling you out)

If history is to repeat itself, AT&T will follow suit with similar plans. Probably before ...

I said they were all about the bottom line. As they should be. I don't have a problem with a company being greedy. I expect it. I expect them ALL to try to circumvent rules and laws created to promote fair competition. If there were no regulation companies would ride roughshod over consumers and they will try to regardless. I take exception to the idea that Verizon or any other carrier or company 'caring' about its customers. Complete and utter nonsense. Now. Carry on.

I disagree with you on two points:

1st, Example 2,
If you read Verizon online Share everything brochure you cannot enroll in the $30 unlimited talk and text without also adding at least the $50 data package. And I would imagine it would take a few months to use 1GB of data on a basic phone. Especially giving VZW says on their website most smartphone user use between 1 and 2GB.

2nd, .....smartphone to run their laptop, desktop, PS3, XBOX 360, Wii, and their Roku....
I total agree that some people misuse "unlimited data" but the wireless carriers did that themselves.
The piont that I've notice that both wireless professionals have missed is that this affects low to moderate users the most. Not everyone wants or needs data, unlimited ...

bottom line, this will cause customers to become frustrated with picking a rate plan that suits them. 4g is very addicting and that is what draws customers in and vzw WAS the first to get it in my area but having to limit yourself is still not something the average customer can grasp. Sprint, tho their data network has taken an even bigger dump than where it was before since upholding unlimited data, is still the best deal for MOST ppl, everything data plan offers best value, these new plans do not and are not for everyone i 100% agree. When sprint gets 4g lte in my area, ---->plans begin in november in my market. and once sprint catches up b'c of clearwire's games. They will definitely lose the sucks that ppl place in front of its name....

So you will go from the Corvette that is Verizon to the Chevette that is Sprint? Just so you can possibly have unlimited data that most likely will change and you will be forced off it.

I always love assumptions. Especially when decisions pertaining to expenses come into play. So far, Sprint has said absolutely nothing about changing their price plans. AT&T made an announcement about shared data plans shortly after Verizon initially announced the idea. If someone was talking about jumping ship to go to AT&T, knowing that they are doing the same thing, I could see your point, but "possibly" and "most likely" are terms that really shouldn't be used in a debate.

Anyone who thinks that Sprint will continue unlimited data now that they have the iPhone is renting a house in Oz.

They will have to milk every penny from their customers they can to pay for their contract with Apple.

They are, in the words of their own CEO, going to lose money on the Apple contract for 5 years.

And, since the current iPhones are not LTE, they will have increased heavy data use on their 3g network, but will be forced to retain it to support those data hog devices.

Sprint got caught between the Devil and the deep blue sea. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Without the iPhone, they were bleeding customers at an unacceptable rate.
With the iPhone they will experience huge fiscal losses and degradation of...

If I could have a Chevette that I could drive as much as I wanted and pay a flat monthly rate for gas (say $100 monthly) I'd do it.

I have two phones, one smartphone and one basic phone on a Nationwide 2000 Family Share Plan:

$70 (1400 Shared Minutes)
Smartphone - $9.99 Access + $30 Unlimited Data + $10 Text
Basic Phone - $9.99 Access
Basic Phone - $9.99 Access

* I average around 2.5 GB of data (some months I barely use 1 GB, some months I use up to 4 GB).
* I have never gone over my texting allotment.
* The basic phones incurs maybe 1 or 2 text messages in any given month, that's all.

So, I'm spending $139.97 per month. If I switched to the new plan I'd be spending:

$40 Smartphone + $30 Basic Phone + $30 Basic Phone + $70 4 GB = $170.

I don't see any reason to give Verizon an additional $480/year for what I don't need. Just pointing out that while so...

Not to be a stickler, but the difference between ~140/month and $170/month is $360/year.

You point still stands though.

BTW, your unlimited data is grandfathered, until you decide to upgrade your phone.

To keep it, you will have to pay full retail for a new phone to keep the unl data.

I know, but I think the "alternate upgrade" is the trick around it. I use my discount for another line that doesn't have data to begin with, then swap back to the old phone and I have a new smartphone to use on any of my lines 🙂

I'm not sure how that would be a trick around this policy? You are still doing an upgrade, they will still make you switch to the new plans. They don't care which line you take the upgrade from or which line you use that upgrade on, an upgrade is an upgrade and an upgrade means you have to move to the new plans.

If you are talking about the current plans and not the ones coming on June 28th then there is no need to do any tricks. They let you keep your grandfathered plan currently.

The people who will not benefit from these plans are the ones that use their smartphone to run their laptop, desktop, PS3, XBOX 360, Wii, and their Roku....at the same time. Guess what: regardless of what you think, that is NOT what cellular data was meant for.

I beg to differ. As far as the gaming systems I can agree with that but Laptop usage and such of the same like is actually what it was meant for. Do you not remember the commercial Verizon ran with the little girl in the airport tethering her network to several different people for a fee? That right there is an advertisement of the many uses of the network. They encouraged this type of usage. So am I to believe that using my network in which I pay for in the exact manner you ad...

Our unlimited data plans are still grandfathered. What you have to prepare for is paying the full retail price for your handsets going forward. Personally, I think that it is worth it. I have THREE smartphones with unlimited data plans and I plan to keep them all. Two lines eligible for upgrade BEFORE June 28 and I haven't decided if I should use the upgrades or just wait until the phones die and bite the bullet. I don't expect loyalty from a corporation. I know that they want to bleed me for every nickel they can.

I expect the same. I know they want my money. Hell I want my money. But this new shared data plan is to rid most if not all of those grandfathered in. Phones aren't getting any cheaper The rezound at full price is over $700 the more features put on phones the higher the cost. I don't know about you but I'm not comfortable shelling out a down payment on a phone that breaks on every violent sneeze. I mean come on they don't even offer insurance plans on phones like the iphone.

I just used my upgrade and can you really call it an upgrade. $30 off your next phone. WTF is that? Even with an upgrade you'll be behind in technology on your phone in a matter of months. I don't plan on buying another phone for at least 3 or 4 years. I'm just saying...

Just to point out.....if your sales rep did not offer you device coverage/insurance shame on them. I know that verizon offers insurance on full retail phones but best buy and most of the smaller retailers have upfront coverage you can get. If your rep is not keeping you informed find a new rep.

Secondly if you want a company to subsidize the price of the phone it is not uncalled for them to expect you to play with the current promotions. There are options to keep unlimited data they are not just yanking it and saying sorry charlie.

The bigger Verizon has gotten...the more arrogant they have become. They have always allowed customers to keep grandfathered plans in the past. But yes you are right, they can do whatever they want. In fact, they could just cancel service of those who are no longer under contract if they refused to change their plan. I suspect that will happen down the road, but I'm taking a wait and see approach. If it does then I guess I will deal with it. The iphone line would remain with Verizon and I'd look at porting the others out.

My lady's iphone is insured through Asurion. It's $9.99 per month and the deductible is ridiculously high as well... But what can you do? I pay a good bit of change to Verizon.
