I have an unlimited data plan on my account. Do I need to change it?

You're not required to move to Share Everything but if you do, unlimited data will not be retained on your line. As a Verizon Wireless customer you have choices when you upgrade at discounted pricing. You can choose from a standalone data package starting at $30 for 2GB or a Share Everything Plan. If keeping unlimited is important to you, you can choose to upgrade and pay full retail price for the phone.

So, I'm wondering what happens if I use my discount to do an alternate upgrade? I keep my device on my line...

That's what I did to keep my unlimited data plan. I upgraded one of my other lines and transferred the device to my unlimited line. Hopefully this loop hole still works when ever these new plans kick in....

I'm by no means a Verizon expert, I just feel like it'll be easier for Verizon to clamp down on practices like that based on the fact that CDMA phones don't use a SIM card. With AT&T or T-Mobile, it's as easy as swapping SIM cards between phones. Verizon has more control over which phone you have on what line.

See, this is the part of me not being an expert. I know the LTE phones use SIM cards, but they're still CDMA/LTE phones, so the CDMA portion of the phone still doesn't need a SIM, right? Verizon still controls the phones based on that?

CDMA/LTE phones do have a SIM card, however that SIM card is used for international roaming purposes only, isnt it ? I know some LTE phones also suppord quad band GSM, I was under the impression that SIM card was for the international roaming on gsm networks.

Verizon SIM cards are used to allow you on to their LTE network not for international roaming.

VZW sim cards are used yes to allow you onto the network. Also with that being said you can just take a sim out of a 4g LTE device that place it in another Verizon 4G LTE device and all is good. The 4G sims do contain your number and info. As long as it is a newer phone with 4G it works just like AT&T now.
