They ARE NOT the first....

T-Mobile was doing this on the Sidekicks for a long time now.

Although they don't do it to their entire product line, the sidekick has had this feature for a while.

I would think it would be a little harder for GSM companies to implement this since its customers can have different types of phones outside the regular lineup. With Sprint, Verizon and Nextel, you are pretty much stuck with whatever phone is available in their lineup.

I am not sure if T-Mobile was the first or if Verizon Wireless was the first. VW had OTA sometime in 2002.

The only difference I see between VW's and Sprint's versions of OTA is manual vs. automatic. Sprint is offering automatic updates when they are made available vs. having to remember to manually update the phone.

This article is misleading and false advertisement.

No its not. Verizon offers roaming updates with its *228. They dont offer the update to the softwear that runs the phone. Thats why you have to go into the store and let them plug it into the computer.

*228 and firmwear update is WAY different

Ah yes. I stand corrected.

*228 is OTA activation not programming.

The OTA firmware upgrade must take some time. Wired firmware upgrades take about 20 minutes.

Exactly, they are the first because T-mobile does for the sidekick because they are also the manufacturer, so that means that the manufacturer is offering OTA programming, Verizon and Sorint were both offering OTA PRL updates since late 2001, Sprint is the first to offer software updates and patches.

Get your info right buddy, T-Mobile does not manufacture the Sidekick. Danger has outsources the manufacturing of the device to another company. The Sidekick is NOT T-Mobile exclusive - it is also used by a Canadian provider called Fido.

I think the signifigance of this is lost. Yes T-Mo may have been able to update the sidekick, but it is a data device and the only device that can be updated on their network.
What Sprint is doing is updating all of their phones over the air.

Don't worry I think Sprint is merely the first. Others will follow.

Actually Verizon and sprint did not offer OTAs In 2001 Verizon did not offer OTAs untill after February of 02 when they signed their roaming agreement with sprint thus giving birth to their americas choice network. Sprint technically is the first company however to offer OTA because vERIZONS IS A YSTEMS UPDATE not an automatic update to the phones actuall software. IE. When the motorola T720 first came out there were software defects which required the customer to bring them in to the store and have new software "flashed" into it. Sprints OTA is designed to do "software" updates not "system" updates
