Well, I'd like to clarify a few things.
First, I would more specifically say, that coverage for Cingular is expanding. It's not really "growing" since they aren't building aby new towers. Rather, they are going to spend 2005 consolidating and spreading out the over 40,000 cell sites the now control with the acquisition of AT&T (as opposed to VZWs just over 26,000). Further, Cingular currently covers 100 out of the top 100 major U.S markets as opposed to VZWs 97 out of 100. Also,...

Odd that you mention high speed network. If Verizon has only 30 percent of its network covered in ev-do, then they still have a smaller highspeed network than Cingular. We use EDGE and it's available on almost the entire network. It's not as fast as ev-do, but the service is available nationally.
Now to the HSDPA network in atlanta. It's not just 2 towers and a data card. It's the entire city. These tests were performed in virtually every part of the city and the results were the same. These tests are a true indication of the speed of the technology and you can bank on it. Lucent wouldn't publish those numbers unless it could prove it. Be afraid.
No EDGE is a little slower but it is everywhere just about, unlike EVDO and how many phones have EVDO that are out and you can buy in a store, 1? By the time EVDO is everywhere and there are phones to support it HSPDA will be almost ready. Why don't you do a little google search for EVDO--everything that comes up related to EDGE says it is capable of speeds UP TO 387kb/s. Pay close attention to the words UP TO, that doesn't mean that it is a speed someone will get, it's a possibility and theoretical peak. This is the same as VZWs national access.

EVDO has an UP TO speed of 2mb/s, but like I said UP TO speed is BS and what one needs to pay attention to is average speeds. You cannot comapre the average speed of EVDO to EDGE, it's like me playing one on one with Shaq. EDGE and 1xRTT are two compare.

While I am big supporter of UMTS and HSPDA, its going to take a bit longer than you think to roll out these new technologies than you think. Put this in perspective... it took ATT nearly 5 years to match the service of GSM to that of TDMA. These new broadband services are not going to be coming out overnite, especially if you do not live in one of the top 50 markets.

I am so glad that someone has made the point that CINGULAR has 40,000 cell sites! More than any other carrier! Period! Not to say that means they have coverage in every nook and cranny, but that they do have more cell sites is a fact.
I think Verizon wins the prize for the best media campaign ever. They truly have deceived everyone into believing they have more sites than anyone else. I work in the Cingular cancellations dept and I hear that as the reason people are leaving. The funny thing is that most people that I talk to who are cancelling with AT&T wireless/Cingular have the nokia 5160 or 5165 and are fed up with poor signal. Yean no kidding, if you have old equipment, how can possibly expect it to work properly. Sure, in some or even most cases it may still work, but in other cases and possibly as well it may not.

This has nothing to do with cell talk, but it is the equivalant. A good friend of mine constantly complains about how much his Honda sucks, how its so unreliable, blah blah blah. I constantly have to remind him. "ITS A 1987 FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?!?!".. 😛

I'm glad Cingular is working for you.
As a cingular customer you are limited to your providers coverage area. Unlike verizon or sprint which can roam off one anothers networks for a much larger network then cingular. 🙂

Limited to a network that is larger than either Verizon or Sprint... Honestly who really does all that much travelling in the areas that aren;t covered anyway. Not to mention just because they are on a map of a company, there is no service guarenteed

That's true...my parents live in a dead zone about 15 miles long and 20 miles wide, yet on the Verizon Wireless they show it as being covered by digital signal...and digital signal barely works in the area! On their street level maps available in the store, it shows that it's actually a dead zone. It's large enough to put a white dot on the national map.

This is big news, that is what kind of speed I get at home on my cable modem!!! You can't argue this is the best thing in wireless in years, since text messaging. Big deal we will see.....This is the first glimpse of the furture of wireless, finally.

The speeds discussed in the article far exceed the speeds you get at home on your 'cable modem' - I guarantee it.

What's the guarantee you are offering? I get 4megs at my house using my cable modem.

The speeds that I get and others listed here are actually an anomally from what I understand based upon what I understand the national average. The northeast has exceptionally high broadband speeds because of Adelphia and Comcast having their major hubs in Penna. I understand that the national average is about 500k overall.

sorry, not "stealing bandwidth" from anyone. maybe you just have a terrible isp.

You need to visit www.cox.com . they advertise up to 5megs. you have to pay 10 buck more a month for the extra meg. i pay for 4 and i usually cruise around the 3.5 mark. you can also visit www.broadbandreports.com . They have speed tests and show average benchmark speeds for individuals. cox customers are cruising pretty fast. when I had dsl, i had faster speeds than the 500k you are talking about. i usually cruised over a meg.

What type of DSL were you using because the most common type of DSL is A-DSL, the type pushed by Verizon, while it may advertise 1.5 Mbps down, that is only if you run straight copper from switch to house, have no other users on the switch at that time, and the latency times for said switch is set to 300ms or less.

Now... out on the west coast they run something called S-DSL which I hear can hit speeds of 2-3Mbps or higher. But with SDSL the switch gear that supports this is primarily only made by Nortel and its about 5x the price of A-DSL switches. The area of operation of S-DSL is smaller as well.

This is actually a very big deal. 3 mbs to each user... wow... this has the ability to change the way we communicate...

Think about it, this will change the way we connect to the net, the way we talk to people (streaming video phones on full duplex is a distinct possibility), streaming video and music... all through a little handheld. Think of the Tapwave Zodiac 2 and what it would be possible of doing with an always on 3mbps data connection with simul voice... Its going to create an ultra competive environment between ISP's, Cable companies, and Cell phones and competition is a very good thing.

As for the T1 reference... in my neighborhood Comcast laid a Fibre backbone where I can hit consistent 4.5mbps using Cnet's bandwidth test...

I live in a smaller community and its easier to run highspeed connections to every home. Cox is setting up their network to deliver video, phone and internet service to every home on just one fiber line. They have put their network in place to run fiber to the curb at every residence. I live in Branson Missouri where there are about 12,000 people total in the areas where Cox provides cable service. I beleive that our local cox office uses a fiber optic line that supports an OC-192 into the area and then disperses that connection to all of the regions within our region.

OFDM is from Flarion, which was (or is being) acquired by QualComm...

Supposedly, Qualcomm might be able to use that to offer 4G services...maybe CDMA as we know it has no future.

But, will that have any impact with GSM family? It seems doubtful that Qualcomm would co-operate with GSM in terms of a new technology, unless GSM is willing to license it for royalties...

Shouldn't Cingular really be concentrating on improving their poor coverage?

I can't speak for everyone, but my Cingular coverage is great, and my coverage is all I really care about lol. So as long as it's working fine for me, I'm happy. If someone elses Cingular phone across the country says "No Service", thats really not my problem nor will it make me think twice about switching to any other carrier.

Based upon my obeservations I think Cingular should continue doing what its doing. The great thing about UMTS and HSPDA is that because its actually a W-CDMA technology we won't have to worry about the amount of users per tower as we do right now.

That is the only advantage that VZW has right now. The biggest plus of CDMA is that because it is a spread spectrum technology they need alot less towers to accomodate the same amount of users that Cingular has. I go by quality of network vs. number of Cell towers because I remember back when there were analog towers everywhere but that didn't mean you were going to get a good signal.
