Cellular Hand-off to wifi networks completed automatically when entering a wifi calling zone.

In downtown Toronto, no matter where you are in that city, there is wifi available thanks to broadcasting routers on almost every corner / lightpost. When there, i never, ever touch or even think of using my actual cellular minutes / data, everything goes through the wifi.

wifi handoff and secondary wifi networks ARE the cure to this spectrum "crisis".

that would be great except we have very few areas like that in the states. wifi is almost as much a commodity as cell service and most places still charge for wifi or require some special code to be entered, while in signal range, which can only be acquired if you are a paying customer in the establishment. even then it is for a limited amount of time. Applebees for instance requires that you ask your server for a wifi connect card, you enter code, you get access...but the access is only good for, i believe, 1 hour.

That really does surprise me - I have never heard of wifi used like that. There is a Mcdonalds here that offers wifi, no password, totally unlimited use (They'll kick you out of the store, but the actuial wifi connection never drops) and the libraries here offer free no-password wifi also. Would be great if this kind of thing spreads.
