VZW president saying that they did not see impact from customer base over the $30 upgrade charge, so it must be the right thing to do... sounds scary. Does this mean as long as we do not complain, they will continue to gouge us?

Yes.

Price increases are never the right thing to do unless there is some benefit to the customers in terms of better devices, faster networks, more bandwidth.

When they just keep take, take, taking without even tossing us a bone, all they do is alienate us.

When the Verizon and AT&T drone customers keep taking it, Big Red and Big Blue are just going to keep giving it. Until people wake up and start rewarding carriers who don't have these practices, it will continue.

Shammo noted that he doesn't think the price increases will cost Verizon customers, and pointed to the company's recently implemented $30 upgrade fee. Shammo said Verizon Wireless didn't see "any impact from a customer base from that fee.

😳 Sounds like he is living under a rock, and didn't read or hear about all the forum posts on Phonescoop or Verizonwireless.com from all of the customers expressing their outrage over the $30 upgrade fee, & taking away our unlimited data on smartphones. Or maybe he did, and just doesn't care... And when he says he doesn't think the price increases will cost Verizon customers, that is a good indication that it WILL in fact cost the customers...

I think a little reading lesson is in order.
It was not stated that the change would not result in a cost to Verizon's customers.
He said that it would not "cost Verizon customers" - in other words, their customer base would not decrease due to these changes.

Hmmm... I read very well, thank you. But I read the article again, and still think it could be taken either way. Maybe he should've said, I don't think this will cause us to lose any customers. But I'm glad you pointed that out, because now I have even more of a reason to be angry. Now I interpret this as saying, well we keep on adding fees, and taking services away, with no consequences, so why not charge them some more...

My reading skills are excellent. Thank you for your concern. I read this to say that as long as it does not cost us customers, we will continue to add fees, take away services, whatever. I am currently on unlimited data. When (and if) I switch to another device on Verizon, how do I "share" with only one device on my plan?

Likely they will change your feature code to one which will allow blah amount of devices. The main gist of this will be that you will have a MB allotment rather than the blanket "Unlimited" data. It almost seems that they can't figure out a way to throttle LTE so they are getting rid of Unlimited for that reason. *Shrug* Regardless, you need to do what the rest of us are doing. Determine if you are going to stay or leave.

I work at Verizon and I agree that they are adding on too much at once. It is going to upset a ton of people but I can say that unlimited data is unecessary for most. Seriously 95% of people use under 2GB of data and most use under half. The amount of data that people use and whether unlimited is necessary or not isn't the issue though. Verizon just keeps on hammering new fees and it is AWFUL trying to justify all of that to angry people. two weeks notice put in two days ago 😁

Why would he care? The only action a disgruntled customer can take that he would notice would be to cancel service. And it would take MILLIONS!

No one complains but Verizon will go from having the most subscribers to less than T-Mobile in two years. They all will jump ship to other carriers. NO ONE COMPLAIN SO VERIZON STILL THINKS ITS OK.

Definitly agree with you here. Saying "it was the right thing to do" was definitly not what he should have said

From Verizon's standpoint he's right though aka why not charge more if people will pay it

but I'm a firm believer that if you do the right thing, then things work out in the end... trying to bend customers over constantly is going to blow up in their faces

I'm typically not a fan of regulation, but I fear it may be needed now. There just aren't enough viable options in all areas... some of that is a spectrum problem

This is going to be big news this summer

We often take flack for mentioning "regulation". But, the truth of the matter is that gas and electric utilities are private sector organizations that are highly regulated in order to protect us consumers from falling prey to price gouging.

Many people segregate wireless from utilities citing reasons that one is a luxury and one is a necessity. I dare anyone especially businesses to relinquish their phones or wireless devices in today's standard of practice. This will prove whether phones are luxury or not.

I'm betting most in society are not willing to revert back to smoke signals.

With the last year of developments in the wireless industry, I gotta say I completely argree

While I tend to err on the conservative side (if you don't like it, go somewhere else). I will not say that cell phones are such a luxuary that they're not almost required of us to pursure happiness (see what I did there)

I love your point that (paraphrasing here) "at some point, regulation is the only way it will not get worse"

Thank you for your intelligent reply.. you don't find a lot of those on the interwebz anymore... let alone from the "sky is falling" cell phone cust/reps

You've taken my point correctly and the way it was meant to be.

1) To consider a wireless device such as a cellphone a luxury, is definitely a matter of opinion. However, how many are willing to let go of them?

2) In many cases, some people don't have any other choice but only Verizon or only AT&T. So to go somewhere else is not an option sadly.

3) As you paraphrased my statement: What actual harm is done to normal consumers with regulations in this case? None. Individuals working in the wireless industry need to start thinking outside the box. Outside of this industry, they are consumers just like the rest of us subscribing to a carrier. They easily forget that they purchase products of other industries that are indeed regulated. ...

John, I find that more government regulation no matter how well intended, makes things worse.

In most markets airlines are competitive and your example in #4 is exactly what happened there. When one started charging for bags, the rest followed except for Southwest and Jet Blue. No government regulation could have avoided that.

The answer has to be consumers. Refuse to pay the fees and go elsewhere. There are very few markets where you only have AT&T and Verizon to choose. In those markets I'm sorry. Maybe the FCC needs to open some spectrum for a new wireless player. If there were demand for it, they likely would. For those markets with a choice, everyone should defect.

Regulating bag pricing is not prudent when one has the choice to purchase the bag or not. It is purchase the accessory or don't. Just like accessories in wireless stores.

E.G. You can purchase your charger at the carrier store for a certain price, or purchase it down the street for half the price.

Regulating a no option business pricing as in rate plans in an industry that is losing choices for customers, needs to be seriously looked at or customers will not have the power to govern the carrier's attempts of pushing limitations.

Not to mention, people can frequently get around the baggage pricing by shipping stuff back after vacation. Frequently it ends up being far cheaper than paying the prices to the airlines.

I am in an area with not alot of options. So this affects me quite a bit. I really wish in some areas there were more regulations. I am the LAST person to want the government to step in, but in some areas that is whats necessary.

It's OK to use the word "conservative". That just implies that
your responsible, and morally upright person 😁

Cause to me at least, the swear word
"liberal" means the complete opposite. Irresponsible & mortally loose.

I hear ya Jay,

Unfortunatly being two Conservative is also a bad thing... and this debate about unlimited data is a perfect one.

the strong conservative opinion: If you don't like it, go somewhere else or A Cell phone is a luxary

The strong liberal opinion: My phone should be free, service cheap, everything i want, and work everywhere

Neither of these "ideals" is correct in my opinion... a good balance of liberal and conservative views is generally the way things need to be. (my opinion obviously)

Yes! Balance is good! Back in 09 I think it was I was thinking to myself that it's not good that there are soooo many demoncrats in both the house & senate,
there needs to be more of a healthy balance between the two parties.

you need balanced thinking... not balanced votes

With Congress it's kind of backwards... It's nice when one party has control in that they can at least work towards their agenda (dont read that as an absolute, but rather a path of logic)

When it's split neither party can get anything done (see present day) because every issue splits votes and can't get passed

Again, you need balanced thinking politicians, not a balance of extremist? voters
