Not that I know of. This is a CDMA device. No GSM.

If they're working on a GSM version, they haven't announced it, and I haven't heard anything.

What makes the manufacturer decide whether they will release a phone for CDMA or GSM? Do they have contracts with the carriers? I would think that it would make them more money to make a GSM and a CDMA version.

Well, EVDO is a CDMA technology. So that's a give away that a the devise will not be GSM/GPRS yet. Also, the only provide that has EVDO currently is Verizon Wireless. Sounds like it's the replacement for the i700. Verizon will be pushing pocket pc with EVDO a lot next year.

I knew that EVDO is a CDMA technology, but in the article it said that it has bluetooth and wifi, "in addition to EVDO."
I just thought Verizon phones were too simple to have bluetooth and wifi.

Audiovox 6600 v. Samsung i730? Both announced within days of each other and both on Verizon. Very competitive. Wonder what the pricing will be? I've been waiting a good year for these phones to arrive and soon one will be in my hand (January?). Can't wait!

Which one would you choose and why?

What makes you think that these phones will comeout within the next year. Verizon is well known for making stuff comeout so slow ..its not new when they get it.

According to this article (Dec 16, 2004 - see below) the 6600 is already available from Verizon.

I think Samsung announced their i730 to position their phone as an alternative to the 6600. Before Samsung's announcement I would have bought the 6600 as soon as it became available. Now I'm going to think twice. I bet the i730 arrives within three months after the 6600 is released. Hopefully sooner. -Bill

"Verizon Wireless today announced the availability of the XV-6600 EV-DO PDA-phone from UTStarcom (formerly Audiovox). Now available to business customers, the XV-6600 is the first handset in the country with CDMA 1xEV-DO high-speed data capability. Verizon currently offers EV-DO service in 20 cities and 24 airports across the country. Th...

I believe this is a 3G only phone. Probably they have a UMTS version they are working on for Cingular and others. This may be where the division between GSM and UMTS begins.

I know Cingular has already launched UMTS in several cities, the only city I'm 100% about is Detroit. Why Detroit? I have no clue. I think Chicago woulda been a better choice, but that's only because I live there 😁
