I'm sure they did know that. But AT&T would have laid of *more* employees than T-Mobile would.
It's like saying Wells Fargo and JP Morgan Chase would merge, expect to keep the same number of customers, and increase the salaries and number of employees in the combined company. AT&T & T-Mobile -> LOTS of redundancy, and redundancy = unnecessary expense to a company.
