If only the DOJ knew of Tmobs plan to lay off an exorbitant amount of workers if the ATT merger didn't go thru.

Well, I doubt this will be the last we here of it. They aren't going to be able to meet their so called plans by just laying off 1,000 people. Even if the positions were some of the top paid positions, it wouldn't amount to enough residual annual profit to finance the push forward in their plans. Stay tuned, more layoffs will be coming. But, I guess we will see in time.

I'm sure they did know that. But AT&T would have laid of *more* employees than T-Mobile would.

It's like saying Wells Fargo and JP Morgan Chase would merge, expect to keep the same number of customers, and increase the salaries and number of employees in the combined company. AT&T & T-Mobile -> LOTS of redundancy, and redundancy = unnecessary expense to a company.
