Did Samsung buy up all the worlds cheap plastic?

Do they have a over abundance of cheap plastic which they stocked up on in inventory in which they need to rid themself of? They must have gotten a good deal on plastic. So now they have enough to make the Galay S X in 2019 and after that they will start using quality materials…HTC FTW.

hmmmm-not sure I agree with you on this point. Plastic is just fine as a material, cuts down considerably on the weight and provides greater impact resistance. I've worked for cell phone mfg's can tell you this should be a non issue. If you like something else that's fine but don't think plastic by itself is bad, it's not. Just saying.

Well put. It tires me hearing these tired complaints of "cheap plastic."

Plastic =/= cheap or poorly made.

Yes there are cheap plastics, just as there are high quality engineered plastics. Not all plastics are created equal.

Metal dings and dents, glass shatters when dropped, but you just can't beat the light-weight resilience of a good plastic shell. I've dropped my GSI from over 6 feet clattering on to pavement with narry a scuff or scratch to be found. That's the kind of quality I want in a phone, and I hope that Samsung keep making their phones this way forever (at least the Galaxy S line...maybe they could do a separate line of metal phones for people that prefer the heft and feel of anodized aluminum or something...)

Technically, they are using the same materials as HTC is on the One X: curved glass front and a polycarbonate back.

The only real difference is that it's not unibody. Unibody is nice, but non-unibody means you can access the battery on the Galaxy S III, unlike the One X.

The One X also has a matte texture on the back, which I do prefer over the glossy glaze on the Galaxy S III. But that's the extent of the real differences.

If you don't mind the glossy glaze on the back, the Galaxy S III does actually have a very quality feel to it. The curved glass on the front feels very nice, actually.
