Blackjack w/out data plan?

I think the Blackjack looks great. I've played with a few at my local Cingular stores. My problem is I don't want to pay the $39.99 a month Cingular is requiring for a data plan. I need to replace my old pda and my old phone. The Blackjack will work great. I use my phone for talking and texting, but don't want to pay the extra $39/mo. Is there a work around that people are aware of? I'm guessing I could just cancel the $39.95 data plan after I get my rebate money but I'm afraid the phone won't work, or worse, that I get a crazy $1000 bill for a month's worth of phone service.

Any help would be great.

I just bought the blackjack at Cingular, and was told that the rebate is still available if you go with the 1000 text messages for $19.99 plan. This is what I did...but am sort of regretting it, now that I realize I am missing out on all the cool stuff the phone can do WITH the data plan. Sigh..do I want to cough up the extra $40???

Without that data feature, you risk the chance of being charged a very high amount on your next bill. The purpose for that feature is to help prevent you as a consumer for going over in data usage. The Blackjack transfers data at a higher rate that your normal GSM phone like a Razor. So when your Singular Rep strongly recommends the feature, you should ask yourself this question, If I don't get this feature with this phone, whats the point of me having a PDA device???

I just got a blackjack, and I have no intention of using Data. PDA stands for Personal Digital Assistant. What does that have to do with data bandwidth? lets see.. data is used for watching movies, buying ringtones, surfing web. Blech! As a PDA it keeps track of a busy calendar and huge contact database for me.

Cingular offers a refurbished Blackjack online as of yesterday. Like you I didn't want to be forced to commit to a data plan that was as much as my voice plan. I have a laptop and I'm not on my feet all the time that would justify using my phone as a temporary computer. The shady sales people would also say 'why have this phone if you don't want to use the data capabilities?' It's not a Blackberry, meaning it wasn't made to only work with an additional data plan..it's a digital assistant with the capabilities of browsing the internet at high speeds. So I bought the refurbished version and am happy with it and my freedom to choose the data plan that suits my own needs best.
