I always wondered where the 'no unlock' policy came from, I assume it was Apple that insisted on it simply because Apple has always claimed to be 'special' and that its products are 'different' and thus the normal rules don't apply. But I don't know for sure, that's an assumption on my part.

But, now that the 'no unlock' policy has been reversed, that means almost all the restrictive policies where the iPhone is treated as 'special' or 'different' from any other phone has now been reversed. That can't be what Apple wants....they want to be regarded as 'exclusive' but they can't be 'exclusive' if all the policies are the same as for any other phone.

TBone,
I think originally it was an Apple thing, then I'm sure AT&T just kept the policy. They unlocked every other device with basically just call and asking for the code. (if one has been in good standing for 90 days or whatever).

Just call and ask for the code you say????
Good luck with AT&T!!! Get ready to call and speak to around 20 different reps ,then ask for a supervisor before even getting anything in regards to a subsidy unlock code for any of their phones.
T-Mobile is more accomodating with unlock codes.

Mark , all you need to do is call if the account is not past due , you are out of contract or pay your etf, we then file a case on your behalf and within a few hours you synch your phone to itunes and apple will unlock the phone. This takes about 15 minutes on the phone maybe less.
