First Impressions

This phone was on display in a Verizon store on Monday of this week. I had a chance to play with it a bit. My early impression is that is feels very 'plasticy', is very light and feels like the top 1/2 will come flying off at some point if you are not gentle with the phone. It did not have a $150 feel to it. Quite honest, that alone discouraged me from being interested in its features.

I work for Cingular, but $150 is not bad for a phone with these features, but, once again, you can get a different impression by feeling and playing with the phone. The way a phone is built will tell you a lot about it. I've never liked "plastic" feeling phones. There's a few for Cingular that feel as if you could crush them in your hand! of course, they don't cost you much either.

I imagine it'll do what all Kyoceras are designed to do...break.

😈
I've had 3 Kyocera's and I'm hard on my phones and all of them have done what they are designed to do... make and recieve phone calls. I will say that the KX2 is very big and while it doesn't feel fragile, it does feel a bit plasticky... ie it doesn't feel solid. The swivel looks like its the weak point of the phone. The camera was very good, the screen was excellent and the call quality was excellent as well.

I just had a meeting with Kyocera for my company. This phone felt great to me. I'll admit it did have a little plastic feeling, but these phones are made to be simple. I have used kyoceras in the past. They are well performing phones. They do break here and there, but if you are worried about that, buy a Nextel phone. Still, it isn't have as "plasticky" of a feeling as the Moto V180 and that phone works decent enough.

I can't remember a single model that made me swoon. The 2035 was OK, but no great shakes.

I've noticed a pattern of late with Kyocera. Where they used to build phones that were heavier and better put together, they now seem to be putting out models that are lighter with parts that seem not to fit together too well. And as for the Koi's swivel hinge...that the weak part on any swivel phone.

I personally have been using this phone for the last 10 months or so for purposes of testing with the network. Testers tend to bang the phone pretty hard and so far the swivel hinge is intact and as good as it was when it came to me new.

We're just citing Kyocera's penchant for shoddily put together products.

Guys,
In Argentina this phone works, as right said Mr. Brome, and as all the Kyo phones it works decently, like some Samsung or Moto phones. Too bad that CDMA will be no longer available for use in here... 😢

Then you, as a tester, are easier on your phones than most...because one good drop for this phone would definitely break it. It neither felt nor looked too well built to me.

I'm sure the price will come down soon. Kyocera isn't known for high-end phones (with the exception of the 7135). My question is how long this phone will be on the shelf before Kyocera issues another battery recall....

Its definately cool phone, i dont know if takes good pictures because I haven't uploaded any to my computer--this is the best way to tell if takes good pictures or not otherwise all you are testing is the display resolution. For example, I have vox 8900 and while looking at pics on the display it looks crappy and on the lg 6000 pics on its display look awesome, however if you upload the pictures to a computer you will see that the vox takes much better pictures.

The kx2 does feel light and placticky which definately gives the perception of fragile, but so do most new VZW phones expcet the V710 and kinda the a670. A drop test would be a great determinant of whether or not it is a perception.

My vox 8900 doesn't feel light and plasticky ...

I too have only had the phone for less than 48 hours. I traded my Motorola V60i for a Motorola V265 and returned that within two days. Tiny screen that was impossible for me to read in the sunlight. Otherwise I would have kept it. I use mine outdoors a lot!

The KX2 takes some doing to get used to. I love the fact that I don't have to open the phone at all in most "normal" situations and the screen is at least readable in sunny situations.

Cons? At this stage of the game I only have a few.

The phone was designed by a "lefty." If it hinged the other way I'd be happier.

I can't enable the speakerphone without opening the phone far enough to push the button. Something I CAN do with my left hand, but it would be far more conven...

I just got this KX2 Koi yesterday (I was within my 15 day trade in limit with verizon wireless, and traded in my LG VX7000)....
I think this phone has a lot of neat features, but it seems to take longer to operate. One thing I noticed when taking a picture and trying to send it to an email, you need to type the whole address in each time (there is no where to save an email address, which is a pain and time consuming). In the "Contact" tab, you can put someone's name and phone number, but I saw no where where you can store an email address. The phone should have a feature which saves the last email address for faster sending of photos. The buttons have a strange 'empty sounding clicking" when you want to advance to another area - so I se...

Contacts list does have the ability to store email addresses. In fact you can have several numbers and an email address for a person in the contact list. In addition, you can shoot a picture and then assign it for a particular contact. When you receive a call from the particular contact, you also get to see the picture of the caller on screen.
If you are unable to get to these features, consult the manual. Actually it is pretty simple to use and has been there on quite a few kyocera phones.
