This is a major breakthrough for CDMA phone manufacturers, carriers, dealers and consumers.
This new chipset if it does what it is supposed to will lower the prices of CDMA handsets.
Imagine a phone with streaming video at the same price that a consumer would pay for a GSM camera phone.
All of the GSM fans who berate the lack of "cool phones" for CDMA because the cost of manufacturing CDMA phones makes full featured phones more expensive than the average consumer is willing to pay will not have anything to say.
DSL speed PDA phones at a fraction of the current cost of 1X PDA phones and later PDA phones with data speeds faster than cable for the same price.

Much of the lack of selection of VZW phones is due to the costs. If you look at the GSM phones they are cheaper because it is a more mature technology so there are more feature packed phones because they can be marketed at a lower price. Sprint has cooler phones than anyone but for some reason Sprint customers do not demand a free phone.
Having sold Sprint, Verizon and USCC I can tell you that VZW and USCC customers are very hesitant to pay more than $50.00 for a phone. Sprint customers pay an average of $100-$200 for a phone. This drives what is available to sell.
It is not so much Verizon as what their customers will accept.

Sprint is a johnny come lately to the "free phone craze" In time their customers will probably have the same demands as VZW's In their favor theirs is probably the best and quickest to market new technologies. They can say "We've been doing that for a long time" to any carrier who brings a new digital feature to market. This makes it so people want the new features and will pay money for a phone that has them. Verizon is usually about 3-6 months behind Sprint in new digital features.
T-Mobile follows that by a few months and Cingular lags behind that by a few months.
