HTC = Heavy Taiwanese Crap

HTC is a smartphone maker so friggin horrible they didn't even put their own name on the device so they wouldn't have to support them.

They have the saddest excuse for quality control I've ever seen as well. Look no further than the issues with the Nexus One (I'm not talking just about the 3G Radio issues either.)

I don't know what drugs one must consume to support HTC but if so I'd like to know where I can buy some. ๐Ÿคฃ

Anyway, good for Apple. Without HTC phones we'll reduce clutter in our landfills.

Funny, I've had my Hero (Sprint) since release day without one problem. I've also sold quite a few and haven't had one of those customers come back with any problems. (Hardware or software)
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SAYING?????
HTC makes a lot of quality PDAs, including Dell X50v and X51v and HP RX3000 series. Over 50% of PDA/smartphone models are made from HTC.

Horrible News For Palm

Some of these HTC patents are a stretch simply because HTC is not an OS company. Of course, this is a good example as to how an "open source" software product puts the hardware vendor at risk.

However Apple is either waiting for Palm to die (cheaper), or is going to wait until it stings the most. There's no denying Palm's WebOS flagrantly copies from a LOT of the iPhone's OS.

I hope Jeff Ruby's got some licensing agreement in the works, because I don't think Apple's going to go too easy after Palm's whole USB spat.
It will take years to clarify exactly what some of these processes entail.

They are doing this to try and stall competition, nothing more.

It's Protectionist Garbage.. If every software company sued whenever another company borrowed an idea, N...

They may very well be turning a blind eye to Palm since Palm holds a large amount of patents on device behaviours that are present in the iPhone.

The "patents" Apple is claiming (I don't know why they don't just sue every electronics maker)

http://gizmodo.com/5483689/the-apple-patents-****pun ... »

Notice: My legalise is a bit rusty.. but I think these are what the patents translate into. Feel free to correct it if you're more versed than I.

Here is an example of the text:

An apparatus for enabling an object-oriented application to access in an object-oriented manner a procedural operating system having a native procedural interface is disclosed

1. Using a Gesture on the touchscreen to unlock (aka swipe to unlock)

2. Slide Transitions between windows (aka, that it looks pretty when you go from one window/app to the next)

One strategy for patents is to claim an invention by means of doing something everyone already does, but doing it on a new medium (which you didn't invent).

Take for example the keyboard patent. Apple isn't just patenting an onscreen keyboard but is instead patenting how the ...

Apple really is going after Google.

Most of the patent infringements are SOFTWARE based, which is Android. HTC builds only phones and installs software on them, be it Android or Windows mobile. The gesture "swipe to unlock" can be changed via over the air software update if Google so desired.
This is an indirect attempt from Apple to go after Google. The reason they don't go after Google directly is Google could seriously hurt Apple financially. This is an indirect way for Apple to hinder Google's attempt at entering the smart-phone industry. I would bet money that Google will "behind the scenes" help HTC as this provides a rare opportunity for them to go after Apple without any risk of loss to themselves. And when Apple gets desperate enough to go after Google directly, or ...

Apple Will want to settle...This is a cash grab

The math behind Patent lawsuits

Only around 20% of these cases ever end up in a judgment.

Less then 4% of these types of lawsuits go to jury.

81% of what DID go to jury(not bench)ended up in favor of the defendant.

What is tricky is if HTC was found not guilty of 15 and found guilty of 5 that is still "in favor" of apple but that would change the landscape as we know it , THAT would indeed hurt Apples chances against Google.

Its a hard thing to PROVE patent infringement when it gets in front of a jury.

Apple is not going for the "kill" ....that is a weird line of thinking...and well...wrong...

If apple wanted to KILL right now....they would target Google.

All aspects target Android implementations

These are all legitimate patents Apple applied for while developing the iPhone- they're the real deal, folks.

The '331 Patent, entitled "Time-Based, Non-Constant Translation Of User Interface Objects Between States," was duly and legally issued on April 22, 2008 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The '949 Patent, entitled "Touch Screen Device, Method, And Graphical User Interface For Determining Commands By Applying Heuristics," was duly and legally issued on January 20, 2009 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. A copy of the '949 Patent is attached hereto as Exhibit B.

Apple's Patents Explained for you HTC Fanboys

Not everyone (including HTC it appears) seems to understand the specifics of Apple's patents. I've highlighted a few that seem to be causing confusion.

1) The Unlock Screen Patent
Before the iPhone, name a single phone that used gestures of any kind to unlock a phone. None. Zip. Nada. This was a concept introduced entirely with the iPhone. LG had a "tap to unlock" feature for their junky touch screens, but this doesn't fall under the definition of "gesture" (at least yet.)

This may seem obvious- "HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO UNLOCK MY PHONE SCREEN?" Yet the point remains, nobody did it before Apple- they relied on a hard key.

RIM has a similar patent covering its holsters which use magnets to lock and unlock the screen. Want to know ho...

More proof that this is nothing more than a PR move

HTC found out about the lawsuit from a press release, when Bloggers contacted them about their reaction to the lawsuit they hadn't even been SERVED the lawsuit yet.
1) It means Apple isn't planning on cross-licensing anything. HTC doesn't have any technology Apple wants.

2) Apple doesn't see any middle ground here.

3) They're not doing any backdoor deals ala Broadcom, etc.

Facts about Apple

Well I sorta know the answers, but I want to hear from the group and see how smart you are.
1. What was the first phone device that used touchscreen?
2. Who was the first computer company that used touchscreen?
3. Who was the first phone company that used a OS as a platform?
4. When was the first touchscreen phone sold?
5. When was the first touchscreen pda sold?
6. When was the first phone with icons sold?

The reason I ask, is that all of these were created before Jan 07 when Apple announced there IPHONE.
So how can apple sue over something that they didnt create?
Apple isn't suing HTC because their phones use a touch screen.

They aren't suing HTC because their phones are PDA's

They aren't suing HTC because they use icons.

Steve Jobs is a crybaby

If we are to believe Apple, Steve and the fan BOYS out there, iPhone outsells every other phone a gazillion to one. What do they have to fear from HTC and Android?

Apple's products are "magical" right? then why the mundane lawsuit over a company that barely sells one/gazillionth the phones the iPhone does? (I'm looking at you blueballs) explain that to me.

๐Ÿ˜ข
Apple products are magical because they spend money on developing user interfaces and pioneer new input methods.

HTC Doesn't.

HTC (And Google) saw what Apple did and tried to mimick it as much as possible. So basically, they want to just take ...

Hey Steve Jobs

Stop suing people. Your making your CRY-Phone look bad. I am seriously tired of this. If you keep acting like this I wouldn't be surprised if Verizon turns down a CDMA version. You are like a drama filled little girl.
Verizon's stuck with 5 awful smartphones, a slow data network, and fleeing customers.

Verizon is not going to take the Iphone if they have to pay 900million dollars per quarter like ATT does. There will have to be alot of adjustements to that for Verizon to accept the I-Cant-Phone.

apple has been stealing technology since the early 80s

They stole the GUI from xerox and the iphone was stolen in the early 90s and they are currently being sued over it.
1) The GUI from Xerox is a myth. It's on friggin Wikipedia.

2) The iPhone was stolen in the early 90's? A phone that debuted in 2007 was stolen in the early 90's?

Androids rule Iphones Blue. /endthread

Android. There are so many advantages to the Droid software over the Iphone that I feel compelled to post due to the overwhelming Droid/Verizon bashing and Iphone/Apple loving of Bluecoyote.

I can download a song, over the Air, FREE, to my phone and I own it. I can then Bluetooth it to someone, put on my computer, give to anyone. (IMusic app in market).

I can choose and do(with exceptional glee) to root and overclock my droid to run at a solid & stable 1Ghz making it even faster than I can believe. 1.2Ghz if I wish making it faster than the Nexus One. (Sholes & SETcpu in market)

It has FREE VOICE turn by turn directions with Google Navigation. Its so much better than the charged apps on Verizon/ATT. The detailed precision of recalcu...

If all phones ran Android, then the only lawsuits would be over hardware, and that's easily determined if a company has stolen it from another.
