GiFi Transmits Data Wirelessly at 5 Gbps
Did I read that right? 5 gigabytes/sec?
If that's right, that's so cool. I don't know exactly what it would be used for on mobile phones, save for near instant transmission of sound and video (assuming Verizon doesn't cripple it), but I could SO use it for my home theater. Imagine a truly (near) wireless home theater. Just power cords and maybe speaker cables. Put this chip in your DVD player and HD receiver, another in your stereo receiver/amp, and another in your TV, and put 5-10 GB of flash memory in your TV and stereo and in less than a second you can push the entire contents of a standard DVD to your TV in less than a second and with decent buffering it could easily handle blu-ray, downloadable content, or HDTV signals.
The Sydney Morning Herald ran the story with a reference to a 5 "gigabit" device; a bit more believable.
Little b... 5 GigaBITS per second. Still, not shabby, you'll just have to wait 8 seconds to get to 5 Gigabytes! ;)

Beaming HD content fron cable box DVRs' BluRay plays, and HD camcorders to flat panel HDTV. That way the only wire connecting to a flat panel would be the power cable.
