Perspective from an RCC employee

I work in senior management for Unicel, but for obvious reasons I won't say exactly what I do or where. Today's announcement was a pretty big surprise for all of us here. I don't think that anyone expected us to be bought out by a CDMA carrier.
Just to clarify a couple of things... first, our GSM markets greatly outnumber our CDMA markets. We only use CDMA in the midwest area, which is most of Minnesota and small portions of Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota. That means that Verizon Wireless will have to overlay most of our network with CDMA. Interestingly enough, the word is that they plan to keep the GSM network running as a source of roaming revenue, since AT&T is our single biggest customer in terms of airtime billing. The ...

I have a question, is Ierizon planning on other carriers i.e. AT&T roaming on their GSM service to help negate the cost for purchasing Unicel... basically are they planning on their GSM service to be a second source of income beyond the new customers ...

I hope that if the spectrum overlays, T-Mobile decides to jump on the remaining spectrum.
Jdigital, how do you think the RCC agents will be affected by this change?

Data goes up 70%????

Wow...and we all thought verizon had issues with data..lol

I wonder the reason for the increase????
They would lead you to believe, "it is because of all the great new features we offere here at Verizon, and of course don't forget are ever expanding coverage of our high speed data network."

Now cutting through the bullshit, any VZW rep would prob...

Does this mean verizon will use GSM towers

I was just wondering if this means that verizon wierless will be useing GSM coverage insted of cdma from then on?
No. The article says they will be changing over the GSM customers to CDMA. Also it would be a HUGE expense for VZW to replace all of their CDMA towers with GSM especially after all of the money they are currently putting into them with the EVDO and RE...

from the story on the front page
though it will keep the GSM networks up and running to help provide roaming coverage to other GSM carriers

Look at the bright side...It took Verizon 6 months to complete the acquistion of a small 30K sub carrier last year, so you can imagine it will take almost a year(from now) to complete this deal, which should give you plenty of time to polish your resu...

UNICEL IN MAINE

I currently own a Wirelesszone in Bangor Maine. Prior to this I was a Unicel Store manager so my phone has been ringing off the hook today.
Coverage, for the Maine Market anyway, will greatly improve for Verizon Customers plus Verizon is currently only licensed to sell in parts of Maine, but with the addition of RCC they will be able so service most of the State.
The only nagitive I see with the purchase is for the Employees of RCC Unicel which may lose the jobs, especially the call center employees here in Bangor.
But on the whole, GOOD NEWS!!
Well, now you MIGHT be able to sell some phones up there. US Cellular has had a lock in that market for some time.

I am sure they can hire a few of you ๐Ÿคฃ
yeah your phonesmight actually work in maine..haha store manager where? i bet i know

You're not surpised, are you? Well, kinda!

As a former RCC employee, I knew the goal over the past few was to be acquired. The goal of the company was and is to provide the highest possible ROI- plain and simple. They are not the food bank or YMCA. Just like all other publicly traded companies, they are for sale 24/7.

I would have never guessed VZW, though. Who would have thunk?! I always assumed T-mo, AT&T, or even Alltel at one point. But VZW shocked me. GSM may prove to be a good bargaining chip for them, though, but time will tell.

Good luck to all those folks in regional offices, retail stores/warehouses, marketing, etc. VZW won't allow much redundancy and they didnโ€™t wake up this morning and decide to do this. They have a plan and will follow it. Your input and concerns m...

NO FAIR

Hey Verizon Shouldn't be able to do this. Its anti-free market. They are gonna become a Monopoly ๐Ÿ™„ Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah!

Now that Verizon has done it. What say you Verizon fan boys / AT&T haters?
I think The Government should approve it provided Verizon sells off its GSM coverage. ๐Ÿ˜›
ok....๐Ÿคจ
The only way it would be ruled a monopoly was if the FCC proved that their ownership of this new area PREVENTS other companies from competing in the same area.
Divest the GSM to at&t! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

its fair to verizon and sprint customers, with their roaming agreements that means both benefit from this purchase as far as i know...GREAT SUCCESS HIGH FIVE! lol and even if sprint doesnt benefit from this, they have put up quite a few more towers up...

Bad news for consumers

This is bad news for consumers. Unicel customers will be forced from GSM to a lower quality CDMA network.

Look for AT&T to try and get a deal in place with other carriers to fill this gap. The last thing in the world AT&T likes doing is writing a check to Verizon for anything!

I just hope that...

Now that Verizon owns Unicel, I hope they don't come knocking at my door asking if I can put my spare change in a box for them. They've got enough of my damn money ๐Ÿ˜ก ๐Ÿ˜ก ๐Ÿ˜ก
