I've had this for years. It's setting my number to Google voice and I can answer calls through my phone, PC, tablet, and make from international to US free all by using Hangouts.

There are plenty of other apps on the Google Playstore that do the same or something very similar to Digits for cheaper or free of charge.

Google Voice?
There are third party apps but none can forward your carrier's SMSs without having active access to your main device. Here this is a network function and your main device doesn't even have to be on.
