so where is the NEW ideas??

I don't see anything here that isn't already done in the wireless industry. Everyone here seems to think that VZW is changing the game when they are really just catching up.

Reasons:

1. The main point of the article... prorated ETFs. Cingular has been doing this!
2. Upgrades... On Sprint (CDMA or iDEN) you can upgrade your phone at any point of the contract as long as the handset you use has been active long enough. Once you've had your handset 12 months you get half of the new customer price, and at 24 months you get the full rebate. AND... you only have to have a minimum of a $35 dollar MRC.
3. Out of warranty swaps... Nextel created this a long time ago, and since the merger Sprint has adopted it for both sides. An even better opt...

Cingular only offers prorated ETF in some markets, not all.

They have always had an Early Upgrade (1yr) and a Full Upgrade (2yrs), however they have adjusted it to make it even more appealing.

Ok, here's the thing.

Cingular DID do prorated ETF's up until Feb. of this year (they MAY still have it in some markets to this day).

Warranty swaps are nothing new to be sure.

Early upgrades are around in one form or another in almost every...

Well, hell...

"If a phone stops working after it is out of warranty, Verizon will replace it for $50."

...that's a very nice surprise.
They already do that in our area. If your phone is out of warranty and is dnf you can have it replaced with a refurbished one for $50. Now if they are going to give you a new one that would be news.

What about secondary lines?

Denny Strigl says:

Now, we’ll not only give you a phone for free
every two years. Customers with only a
$49.99 price plan can upgrade their primary
line handset
after just 12 months for the then
current promotional price and conditions.

What about secondary lines? Do we not matter? 😡

P.S. Merits Customers can already upgrade the primary line handset after a year
From a business perspective a $9.99 a month line really doesn't matter. This is where the catch is. From what I know it costs about $25-$30/month for a line to be active on the network, so Verizon is actually losing money keeping a secondary line ac...

Almost there!!!

Don't stop now Verizon!! Do away with your hideous UIs and you will be a 10 out of 10 company!! And I don't mean those crappy new "interchangable" ones (LG 8300) that they are trying to push on me, I mean bring back the original manufacturer's UIs. I want to be an individual, not like everybody else!!! 🙄
👀 When i got my first verizon phone I loved the UI... I thought it was the best I'v ever used.. Its easy and quick to nav.. now i have the 9800 with the same UI and i dont have to learn a new UI.. i like to be differnt also but common.. som...

clever

Prorating the ETF is clever. I'm really impressed. I feel like everybody on this thread has really missed the significance of that.

Obviously Verizon is doing this drive revenue, but not in the way that everyone thinks. Strigl knows that the other carriers are going to have to play catch-up with this (Cingular is already doing it), but that's exactly what he wants.

Right now, VZW has a port-in rate of about 2:1 with most carriers (even higher with Sprint/Nextel). That means for every customer who leaves Verizon for another carrier, two customers leave their carrier for Verizon. So when everyone has cheaper termination fees we create more motion, because it becomes easier to switch carriers.

The ratios will basically stay at 2:1, bu...

Move the kit/inventory

Let's not forget that legacy technology Li-Ion batteries have limited shelf life, not to mention fairly long "quick" charge times. Therefore, it pays to move out all that inventory.

Does anyone see cell phone form factor nano-particle Li-Ion batteries on the horizon?
See the 36V DeWalt and the 28V Milwaukee power tools, for example. Do a google search for A123, and you might see some info on Motorola, Qualcomm, and others providing them funding.

I would not mind seeing a ramp-up of this new technology Li-Ion battery for safety and convenience. Supposedly, they are more shock resistant and charge much faster.
There was an article in Wireless Week mag last year or so about the state of batteries... It goes along the lines of the handset display screens. A lot of the manf(s) outsource them. That's why Moto (was it them?) had the recall of phones with expl...

The only thing that is new is the prorated etf

all of the other things are the EXACT same as current policy.

Except the free phone every two years is still as misleading as it ever was. The 100 credit has actually been reduced to 50 dollars for any line under 70 bucks and it still doesn't apply to share lines.
It's only reduced when a rebate is involved. For example why would Verizon allow someone $100 on equipment for a phone that is $50 after rebate. Verizon would be paying people for equipment...doesn't make good business sense.
Oh and the whole point to the $100 credit is to get you to buy a more expensive handset. That's really the only think that makes New Every Two worth it.

All I have to say is...

Good job Verizon! These changes are truly beneficial to the customer, and it takes a lot of trust and loyalty to pull of policies like these.

Now if only other carriers could do the same...
hehe, that sounds very good! I'm going to be switching to them in a few months ;), it was a hard choice for me, cingular vs verizon, but after reading so many reviews about cingular customer service, I think I'll pass. This looks really promissing, fe...

Impressed

Verizon has been making some good decisions recently. This news is very encouraging to existing customers like me, as well as customers of other companies who will probably have to follow suit. Advances in customer service are always welcome.

Some of my few issues with Verizon are being addressed. It seems like they're listening to what customers are saying.

In addition, it's encouraging to see them taking some steps in the right direction with technology, like the new flash-based UI and quality products like the Motorola Q, Palm 700p and the LG VX8300.

Props, Verizon. Let's see a good follow-through of this promise.
The new Flash UI is sweet

"That's what industry leaders do"

I really like this quote in the article. A lot of people really don't know how much the industry follows Verizon. I think this is a great idea and will make many customers happy.
