Which is it?

Is it illegal to obtain phone records or is it illegal to sell them? If you can get them, go for it you crafty bastards. But the carriers should be the ones punished, they let them get out. There needs to be more security and training on the ends of CSR reps and such so that this info never leaves the carrier's hands.

I say shame on the carriers...
I am with you. Also, I bet the feds would have been MUCH slower to act had this happened to anyone else otherthan one of their own.
the answer is 42

Kudos to Americablog

I hate to condone purchasing General Clark's phone records to make a point, but it worked. The carriers' lawsuits didn't stop the practice, the federal government is the only one that could stop this. Pity it took a decade for someone to drive the point home that this is wrong. One of the articles mentioned lawyers were one of the major buyers of these records, a significant percentage of politians started as lawyers. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I can't help wondering if they didn't want this practice stopped and they're only doing it now because it's their own security at risk. I was wondering who the next reporter was going to get the records for to get attention for their article.

Atten-Hut!

Apparently the government doesn't take it lightly when a retired General's phone records are purchased.
i love this country 🙂
Yes, definitely. They want to stop everything before someone pulls a Paris Hilton and exposes the General's saucy camera phone pics.
