This doesn't make sense...

I thought it was common knowledge that the AT&T brand was dropped in favor of Cingular because of AT&T's horrible reputation. To switch back to AT&T, after all the marketing Cingular's been doing, makes no sense at all. If I had to switch from Verizon, I wouldn't be inclined to use Cingular service, but I'd be far less inclined to use "AT&T" service.
I think the AT&T name itself was still held by AT&T regardless of the "wireless" at the end of it... This makes it all legal...

Brand Recognition/Eqity

You gotta remember that in the US & worldwide, ATT has huge recognition. Historically, for 100 years, T has been associated w/positive growth.

Over the last dozen years or so, those of us in the industry have recognized that they made many misguided decisions and mismanaged much of their wireline & wireless business operations.

However, much of the $16B SBC paid was for the value of the brand. So, it's not surprising that SBC would change their corp identity to ATT.

It's official

If BellSouth is letting this happen without any protest, expect something big on their part in the near future. One question though, "who in the he** does SBC/at&t think it is"? I just cant believe BellSouth is just letting this ride????? 😡
BLS is not a majority owner of Cingular, SBC/ATT is. It isn't like they have much say if the vote only required a simple majority. Maybe BLS sees the bad rep that Cingular is getting and is in favor of the change to try to turn Cingular around.
