Well, I dont know about other phones/compaines, but mine has the following status:
Sending
Sent
Delivered
Error
Now what if samsung added one that would mark it as read so that when the user reads your message, their phone sends a signal back...

The full article cites to a Samsung published patent application - not to an issued US Patent. The Samsung patent application, by itself, provides no patent protection - it is just an application for a patent.
Let's wait and see, after examination by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, if a patent issues, and what the scope of the claims are (the claims define the breadth of the invention).
Thus, the Samsung concept is not yet "patented" as the article states.

Good Idea?
Our corporate email client (via Outlook) has a similar feature... except the message can be pulled back whether or not it has been read. I wonder how this will impact the carriers billing system. Will the recalled message be seen as never sent or will the recall command be viewed as a standard text messaging charge? The execution should be interesting 😁
What will a carrier do? As much as it can to screw the consumer.
You'll be charged for the original SMS and then a second time for the recall SMS.
