How do you know when you are using 1900 HSPA+ ?

Suppose you have an unlocked 4G Android phone that right now uses the AWS (1700/2100) bands for HSPA+ but it also has a 1900 MHz band. How would you know when your phone happened to pick up that 1900 Mhz band that T-Mo is testing? My Amaze 4G does not show what band it is using at the moment.
My Samsung Phone has a change in the Icon at the top of the screen depending on what you are using, this may happen on your phone too.

this may be a stupid question, but why would you need to know if your phone is connect to 1900 as opposed to 1700/2100 especially if you're using a Tmo phone? its going to be the same hspa+ speeds you had, the 1900 is more beneficial for Tmo customers...
