SMS is not the way

I am excited to see there is so much interest in this arena as I work for a start-up company that is currently releasing its own nation-wide subscription-based 911 text system by July 2012. Why subscribe you ask? Well, first and foremost, using an SMS system is fraught with some fundamental limitations as it was developed in the mid 1980’s. If you are not aware SMS is a transmission system that is sent in the space between phone calls, which means that by their very nature they must be kept concise; no more than 150-160 characters. Any messages that might be more than this limitation are split into multiple "pages" or submissions. Sorely Needed

This is great. Hopefully other carriers will expedite this functionality into their networks. And a BIG hopefully that the PSAPs will receive the necessary funding to make sure their systems are upgraded to take the SMS messages.
Why is this so great?
Maybe im missing something, but if I need to call 911 id rather talk to a person to know they have received my messege.
The only people I could see this benefit are folks who for some reason or another are mute, as in cant spea...
