The U.S. Department of Justice has approved the sale of approximately 6,000 Nortel patents to Rockstar Bidco. Rockstar Bidco is a collection of companies that bid together on Nortel's patents, which were auctioned off last year. Its members include Apple, RIM, Microsoft, and several others. The Justice Department has spent nearly six months scrutinizing the deal for fears that it might strangle competition in the U.S. smartphone market. Though it is allowing the transaction to take place, it warned the companies involved to be fair when it comes to licensing standard essential patents.
