Verizon Says Latest 4G Outage Resolved
Verizon Wireless today indicated via one of its official Twitter accounts that Wednesday's Long Term Evolution 4G network outage has been fixed. The company said, "4GLTE issue resolved overnight. 3G operated normally; calling, texting were unaffected." Wednesday's network outage was the third this month to take down Verizon's LTE 4G services.
FCC to Investigate AT&T 911 Outage
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said the agency will investigate a recent issue on AT&T's mobile network that prevented some 911 calls from going through. The issue occurred Wednesday evening over a period of several hours.
Verizon Settles with FCC Over 911 Outage
The FCC today said Verizon has settled with the agency over an outage that affected 911 operations last year. In April 2014, 750,000 Verizon Wireless customers in nine California counties were unable to reach 911 for a period lasting 6 hours.
AT&T Landline Issue Halts Southeast Wireless Networks
AT&T said a problem with its wireline network was to blame for spotty cellular coverage in portions of Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee this evening. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless customers in those four states reported connectivity issues starting in the late afternoon.
FCC Doles Out More Fines Over 911 Outage
The FCC today announced more fines being levied against telecommunications providers who failed to meet their emergency call obligations during the 911 outage of April 2014. CenturyLink settled for a record fine of $16 million and Intrado Communications settled for $1.4 million.
Verizon Starts Cannibalizing 3G Airwaves for LTE 4G
Verizon Wireless has begun testing the use of LTE 4G on its PCS spectrum, airwaves it primarily uses to operate its CDMA-EVDO 3G network, in Manhattan. GigaOm confirmed with Verizon that the company has begun to steal capacity from its 3G network in favor of 4G, though it is doing so slowly and in limited scope.
