CWA Contends AT&T/T-Mobile Merger Will Create 100K Jobs

The Communications Workers of America has published a report and claims that if AT&T is allowed to acquire T-Mobile, the combined entity will create more than 100,000 jobs in the U.S. The CWA includes the 5,000 outsourced jobs that AT&T said it will bring back to the U.S. from foreign countries, and 96,000 new jobs that it believes will be created to help build out AT&T's LTE network. The CWA also argues that the analysis completed by Sprint and other opponents to the acquisition regarding job losses is faulty, misleading, and sloppy. "The AT&T/T-Mobile merger will create, save or retain more U.S. jobs than a stand-alone T-Mobile which is already on a downward spiral. A Sprint/T-Mobile merger would have been a disaster in terms of technology and finances, and would lead to a decline in U.S. jobs," said the CWA. AT&T is facing lawsuits from the Department of Justice, Sprint, and C Spire Wireless over the acquisition, which has yet to clear government hurdles.

You know what WOULD create more jobs?

The government keeping its filthy hands off of EVERYTHING.

That would not be government; that would be anarchy. Is that really what you want?

As I have noted previously, your hyperbole hurts...

As for what would really create more jobs in the telecom sector, break up AT&T and VZW -- again!

Each wireline/fiber company should be independent of each wireless company. Additionally, each wireless company really could be split into two vertica...

What About Authorized Retail Locations?

While this MAY (I don't think it will) create some jobs (most would be temp work) on the national level, where a FEW locations gain the jobs, EVERY market with T-Mobile and AT&T Authorized retail locations will probably loose one of them. Yes it is "only" 4 or 5 jobs per city and not every city will be effected, but THOSE are the people all of these regulatory agencies need to think about, NOT the temp work of expanding the network, the people who are currently employed in these smaller stores.
somewhat flawed logic. while the actual door will be closed, the people will still be needed. Current staffing in COR and agent is designed to handle the current customer base. It would not be possible to take on an additional 40 million or so cust...

job creation?

100k jobs sounds great, but building a network is essentially a temp job. Not nearly that many would be needed to run it.

Decreased competition has never been good for job growth or for the consumer.

Then again, CWA probably has its own agenda.

Yeah, lining their pockets with large sums of money.

Well according to the article it says they believe it will create jobs. I can say the sky is will turn green tomorrow, it doesn't mean that it will happen. So essentially, it's all spectulation and pipe dreams on AT&T/T-Mobile/CWA's part.

Do they really think we're this stupid?

One company buying out it's competitor has not once ever in the history of jobs existing created more jobs over the long run. I'm insulted that AT&T really thinks we're this stupid.
Amen!

To all doubters, it WILL create 100,000 new jobs......

in INDIA Call Centers perhaps! I have Simple Mobile so I really don't mind AT&T taking over knowing that my coverage area will get a little better so I'm no AT&T hater. However the notion that "competition increases" & "jobs will be created" is just laughable. So, T-Mobile has 35K or so employees now but that number will TRIPLE when AT&T takes over? What an idiotic notion! If lucky, maybe half of the T-Mobile staff will be kept on. Jobs will be lost in this merger eventually. The CWA just looks at picking up union dues & membership by 15-20K as a big win for them & pushing this hard for that reason only. Lying right along with AT&T to just get this deal done. The only way I can see 100K new jobs is if they would fire all the U.S.-based T...

While we're at it...

I propose the government give me $1B. In doing so I'll create 1M NEW jobs!

Each of those jobs will last for 1 hour and pay $10/hr.
