Google today announced a brand new Gmail application for the Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Google says the application merges the best features of its browser-based version of Gmail with the native iOS email application to produce a wholly new app. Google says that the new application is fast, uses the built-in notification features of iOS, and offers a more complete Gmail experience on iOS devices. Google explains that some of the time-saving features include: push notification alerts and sounds; inbox search; autocomplete when typing email addresses; support for photo uploads with attachment button; and split-view access on the iPad. Google says the Gmail for iOS application works with its Priority Inbox system, lets users scan through threaded conversations; and supports archiving, labeling, starring, and deleting emails, as well as reporting spam. It offers full support for the touch interface of iOS devices,, such as pull-down to refresh, swipe right to see labels, and kinetic scrolling. Gmail for iOS is available for download from the iPhone App Store starting today.
