Skyfire Offers Rocket 2.0 to Network Operators
Skyfire today announced the availability of Rocket Optimizer 2.0, a tool for network operators. Rocket uses compression to reduce the bandwidth needed to deliver data over the network. It claims it can squeeze the bandwidth needed to deliver video by 60%, without affecting playback performance on the handset. Rocket 2.0 also adds support for Long Term Evolution 4G. The end result is less costly data delivery for network operators and better data performance on mobile phones.
Opera Mini for Android Adds Video Boost
Opera today updated its Opera Mini browser for Android devices and added video compression to improve playback and reduce data usage. Opera says the Video Boost tool should cut down buffering times and provide smoother performance on mobile devices when streaming video over cellular networks.
Opera Max Improved with Music App Compression
Opera Software today released a new version of Opera Max, its data compression tool, making it compatible with music apps. Max is already able to compress video from YouTube and Netflix when streamed over cellular networks, and can now also compress music streamed from YouTube Music, Pandora, Slacker Radio, Gaana, and Saavn.
Nokia's ReefShark Chips to Connect 5G Base Stations
Nokia today announced new 5G chipsets that will triple the throughput of base stations while also drastically slashing power consumption. The ReefShark chipsets pair Nokia's antennas with artificial intelligence in order to push the performance of base stations.
AT&T's 'Stream Saver' Doesn't Quite Mimic T-Mobile's BingeOn
AT&T said it is preparing a new service that will allow customers to stream more video content over the wireless network and conserve their data. Stream Saver, set to become available early next year, will downgrade streamed video to 480p so it chews through less wireless data.
