Motorola today announced the A630, a new clamshell messaging phone with a QWERTY mini-keyboard. In a unique twist, the phone includes a full keypad and small display on the outside for placing phone calls. The tri-band GSM device also includes a VGA camera, Bluetooth, speakerphone, email client, and multi-network instant messaging. The A630 will be available from Cingular later this summer.

sidekick rival

Good thing that this isnt on T-Mobile. Would probably kill business for the sidekick. I would like to get this myself...its small just like a normal phone and has bluetooth.... Only thing is that this would probably be a pain to get unlocked all the way if i wanted to use it on T-Mobile

By the way, anyone know how to unlock the browser and everything? I can never figure out how to get on chats or internet with my current phones

Who said it won't be? 😉 Cingular will have it first, followed by other carriers.
...
Most all Cingular gsm triband and quad band phones are already unlocked for all carriers. So that shouldn't be a problem. It'll just be the settings that'll give you a hard time.
...
By the way, if Cingular offers it. It'll be unlocked because it's a world phone. Also, you can speak to TMo tech support to getting the settings for TZones. I have done it before when I had TMo with several phones. Sometimes depending upon te manu...

Odd.

Does anyone else think it an odd place to put the camera right next to the earpiece? But looking at it I've also noticed that if they put the camera on the back it'd be face down on whatever surface you chose to put the phone on while texting.
I'm pretty sure they put the camera there because you can use it while the phone is open as well as closed.

Also most people text with the thumbs so to hold the phone open and text with the thumbs is not hard, so you wouldn't need to set the phone...

Interesting

I am now off contract with T-mobile. This maybe just what it will take to get me to move over to cingular, that is if cingular is good in my area and they are offering it at a reasonable price, if not i may have to wait for the much desired K700 for T-Mobile.

Internet can't be better than sidekick though?!

If i'm not mistaken the internet on the A630 is WAP. Sidekick uses some other protocol which to me is just like sitting on your pc, full color graphics and everything. Wap is just the basic text, right? if thats the case the A630 won't be a true rival of the sidekick. are there any phones where the internet looks like the sidekick?

Finally, but...

This is exactly the form factor I've been waiting for (small side-opener that looks like normal phone when closed, but smaller than Nokia 9500), but sadly Motorola had to build it. I've owned a few of their phones (last was P280), but I never could get used to their poor, creaking build-quality...

does anyone know?

does anyone know or have theories as to how this release will affect Cingular's other top tier phones? It makes sense to me that if Moto is releasing a new "top of the line" GSM model, the current flagship, the v600, as well as their other offerings would drop in overall price, which translates into a better deal on the consumer end. 😈 Any thoughts or corrections?

A630

Just an update, it's a Quad Band GSM phone, not a tri band. I got to test the phone for 2 days and I really like it. Should be a hit and in high demand when it's released.
If you happen to have been using it on the 850 band, how was the reception? =)

That's what the rumor mill was saying before it was announced, but no, it turns out it's actually tri-band. Says right there in the press re...
