An In-Depth review of LG's sleek new VX-8500 Chocolate slider music phone for Verizon Wireless. NEW: Video tour

There's no denying it, the sleek black form of the Chocolate is sexy. With a gloss black finish, and a solid black keypad, it bears little resemblance to its edible namesake, but it still shares all the same looks and features as the Korean model that somehow took on this moniker.

Like most phones that put an emphasis on looks, the Chocolate asks you to give up a little in performance and usability for the privilege of carrying a phone that everyone will fawn over. The sacrifices aren't so great for most users, but the select few expecting high tech features that work flawlessly on their high-tech-looking phone might want to wait for a software update or a second generation.

is it supposed to?

I just purchased the white chocolate off of ebay. Its used and the guy did say it had some wear on it, but for some reason to me the slider, once open feels just the slighest bit loose. Like 2 mm movement is possible if not 1.... but its still just something i wasnt sure if it is normal or just that it was used?

No FM radio but can I???

I wish some Verizon phone would finally feature FM, but since that does not seem about to happen, can I do the following with this phone?

1. Listen to Mp3 (podcasts) with Bluetooth headphone?
2. Transfer MP3 files to the removable storage while the storage card is in the phone? Via USB?
3. Transfer files from PC via bluetooth to phone storage card?

thx,
Joey ๐Ÿคจ
the nokia 6256i has an FM radio.

1. yes
2. no, you need to remove the storage card
3. no

quick question- or two...

i've read that you cannot view the time (clock) without sliding the phone open... (as opposed to pushing a side button like most phones)- true or not?

also- and likewise... call waiting- same issue- rather than hitting "send" again- you must close and re-open? not the most important factor in my choosing, but figured i'd as while here...

thanks in advance!
hey
ive only had my chocolate for a day, so i dont know about your second question (i havent had anyone call me while i was already talking on the phone) as for your first question...its a lie. you can press the voice command button on the side and t...

Do the Euro and U.S. Chocolates have same measurements?

๐Ÿคจ

I just got the U.S. Verizon model LGVX8500, and the only people online who are selling clear hard cases for the phone list it as compatible with KG800 (the European Chocolate).

Are both designs/measurements the same? I'd like to order a clear, hard case for the phone, but America does not sell it! I just got back from Korea, and they sell clear cases for every phone imaginable, but America seems to only go for bulky, ugly, leather holsters (ewww).

So I'm wondering if getting one from a UK seller on Ebay would fit my U.S. model...

Thanks!

POS Where it Counts Most

"Despite Verizon's rather thorough coverage of San Francisco, our Chocolate rarely showed a full four bars of 1x or EV-DO. While this probably is not an accurate reflection of Verizon coverage, it was an accurate reflection of the Chocolate's reception. This phone had a difficult time holding on to a signal. When signal strength was good, calls were still choppy. When it was bad, the phone dropped calls quite consistently. Although the phone initially showed a signal in our bank vault test, it could not make a call and when attempting to do anything else the indicator bars quickly disappeared."

Just like I suspected. Who gives a [expletive] about a QVGA screen and Flash UI when you can't make a phone call?

By contrast, when Phonescoop...

Ditto!

Lots of glitz but LGs are noted for poor signal strength.

hey but when you get no signal, you can jam on to your tones.

lg chocolate II (korea)

for the people who actually think the lg chocolate (from verizon) is good. reality check.. i looks like a ****ing ipod. if anyone lives near LA... just find a korean cell phone dealer to get the korean chocolate or the chocolate II

chocolateII (only available in korea)::

in the korean cell phone dealers.. they already have decoded korean chocolates which works for verizon. trust me.. chocolate II is like.. 5000x better than the verzion crap.
That Chocolate II is pretty sweet looking with the featureless front. I still like my US Choco but had hoped it would come out here looking more like the Korean Choco II.

Basic Question for New Chocolate Phone

I just got the new chocolate phone from Verizon. I have all my music on an external hardrive hooked up to my computer. I have a few questions.

1. Do I have to get the Essential Music Kit from Verizon to sync my music with my phone?

2. Once I get my music on my phone, can you make a song your personal ringer?

Thanks in advance for anyones help.
a.1 yes you will need the music kit only because you need the cable that only is offered by verizon.

a.2 one of the best parts of the phone is that you can set your mp3's as ringtones. right now thats the best phone out there. As we all know any p...

Stay away from it

I tried this out the other day, first off, the keypad is too hard to use, it's almost like it's non-existent.....the crappy verizon UI is a waste of time....better off on buying an unlocked GSM version.....
That was one of the main reason i switched to cingular.. its because of verizon UI. it kills any phone.

Saving Pictures to the memory card

Under settings and tools then memory you can have the phone do this. Just like the past 5 LG's or so. Big mistake in the video review!

One good this about this phone...

The chocolate (along with the LG-vx8300) has a feature for the video in which you can either do a 15 second video or switch it to "available memory" which means that if you have a memory card you can put it on video for hours on end and NOT be limited to 15 seconds, which for me is nothing. ๐Ÿ˜ You don't even have to get a memory card to do that feature. You can use the available memory on the phone too. ๐Ÿคค
Since the LG-vx8300 does it too, the Chocolate blows becuase you can get enable the mp3 on the 8300 by just hitting the menu button and zero 7 times, look for music setting and put it on "enable mp3" and you are all set.
Don't waste your money on the Chocolate. You'll thank me later. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
The Chocolate is cooler looking than the 8300. I hate the way the 8300 looks.

It Doesn't Look THAT Good

It doesn't look that good. Anyone else agree? I feel kinda stupid walking around with what looks to be an ipod knock off. Plus I've had people tell me that it looks brown in the sunlight >.< I also find it's 'gloss' or cheap plastic shell to be annoying as heck. I returned a phone I just got from a VZW upgrade to get the chocolate and man is it a giant dissapointment (hooray for 15 day return policies!).

I'm going back to my Nokia
Nokia 6305i which is fairly new and is a slider phone as well. Looks better in my opinion, even though it's got the antenna thingy. And some of the menu buttons are arranged in a circle as well ๐Ÿ˜› Also, being that I vacation in the mountains on some weekends I like the reception on the Nokia a lot better.
i definitely agree with you.. i totally hated the new lg chocolate from verizon so i am illegally using a lg cyon chocolate II. (chocolate II is only available in korea) some people may think the korean phones do not work in the US. but.. it works.. j...

Good review

Well done, Eric.

We have one of these here in my office, and if anything I would say that Eric was too kind. Not inaccurate, mind you, just too nice about it.

To me the Chocolate is just a fashion accessory. I find the keys difficult to use at best because of the lack of tactile response, and I also found them to be less responsive than those on our 1st-generation S710a (with its notoriously laggy key response). I also find it impossible to use with one hand because all of the controls - particularly the keypad when the device is open - are too low. I have admittedly large hands, but a co-worker with small hands had the same problem with the control placement.

I would recommend avoiding the Chocolate if you're concerned about fu...
