Verizon Wireless yesterday started selling the Samsung SCH-A790 to its business customers. The SCH-A790 is the first phone in the world that will work on both CDMA networks in North America and GSM networks overseas. The phone will be available to consumers later this summer, although specific timing and pricing has not been announced.

Finally

I am so glad this phone has finally launched, and cannot wait for it to be available to the store channel. It will also be nice not to have to the GSM people say "VZW sucks because thier phones do not work internationally." Now VZW has a phone that more places than GSM since a VZW customer can go to countries like Korea that have a CDMA network.

No analog ...

... is the letdown for this almost-truly world phone. For those of us that travel overseas AND travel to Wyoming, it's not the end-all solution we were hoping for.

Also, $400 with a 2-yr. contract? Yikes! 😳
Are you kidding me?

What do you think the price of the phone is going to be 19.99? And as for no analog.....

ugh nevermind

International Roaming Question.

Hey, Rich...will you be able to pop a prepaid SIM into this puppy once you're overseas? Or will you have to roam on whatever networks Verizon's made international roaming agreements with?
muchdrama: verizon/cdma doesn't use sim cards (sim cards are exclusive to gsm carriers).

I honestly don't know. If I had to guess, I would say it probably comes locked, but that's just a guess.

It definitely does have a SIM card slot for the GSM part. That much I know.

just talked to a VZ rep at my work

Verizon was at my workplace today offering company discounts and had this phone on display. The VZ rep said this phone would be available next month to consumers for $400 w/ a 2 year plan.

woohoo!
'Bout time. It's a nice phone. The oilfield companies around here have been chomping at the bit for this phone. They do a lot of overseas work, and they're dying to get rid of the satellite phones.
