Isis today announced that Visa, MasterCard, and American Express have joined the Isis mobile payment network, enabling compatibility with most major credit cards and payment networks. Discover was already a founding member of Isis. Isis is a joint venture of AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA, and Verizon Wireless, established to enable ubiquitous mobile payments. Isis will compete, to an extent, with Google Wallet, which is currently aligned with Sprint. MasterCard is presently the only payment network participating in both Google Wallet and Isis. Isis, much like Google Wallet, will be based on NFC-enabled phones that can simply be tapped on a store terminal to pay, and will include support for merchant coupons and loyalty programs. Isis is planning initial trail launches in Salt Lake City and Austin early next year.
