Verizon Confirms Tiered Data Plans to Start in July
Verizon Wireless today confirmed that it will cease offering unlimited data plans starting next month. "We will move to a more usage based model in July," said Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney in an email sent to AllThingsD. "We’ll share more later." Verizon has mentioned several times this year already that it intends to move away from unlimited plans in favor of tiered plans. Before today, it had not said when the change will occur.
FCC Chairman Not Pleased with Verizon's Plans to Throttle Users
Tom Wheeler, head of the FCC, is questioning Verizon Wireless' intent to begin throttling the speeds of its legacy unlimited LTE 4G data customers. Verizon announced the policy change July 25, suggesting it is to help manage its network in congested areas.
Verizon Installs 200 GB Cap On Unlimited Customers
Verizon Wireless plans to cut off customers who use 200 GB of data in any given month, even if those customers are grandfathered in on unlimited plans. These customers will have to agree to switch to a more limited plan or face loss of service.
Verizon to Cut Off Certain Customers Who Exceed 100GB Per Month
Verizon Wireless confirmed plans to disconnect select customers who consume more than 100 GB of mobile data per month. Verizon is specifically targeting customers who have grandfathered-in unlimited data plans and are taking advantage to use extreme amounts of data.
Verizon to Raise Unlimited Data Plan By $20
Verizon Wireless intends to increase the price of its grandfathered unlimited mobile data plan by $20 per month to a total of $49.99. The change affects only 1% of Verizon customers, who've held onto these unlimited plans for some time.
Verizon Turns On 'Always-On Data' for Prepaid Subs
Verizon Wireless added a feature called Always-On Data to its prepaid plans that will keep customers connected even if they use up all their LTE data. In short, people who subscribe to Verizon's prepaid smartphone plans will have access to an unlimited amount of free 2G surfing at 128Kbps once they've consumed their plan's LTE data bucket.
