Responding to reports from end users that their devices were using abnormal amounts data even while dormant, Microsoft investigated and determined that Yahoo Mail is the culprit. In a prepared statement, Microsoft said, "We have determined that an inefficiency exists in the synchronization of email between the Windows Phone Mail client and Yahoo! Mail. This inefficiency can result in larger than expected data usage for a very small percentage of users." The companies are working to fix the problem, which they say will be made available in the coming weeks. Microsoft also points out that users can reduce the frequency their device checks Yahoo Mail, as well as decrease the number of days that mail is synced to save data until the fix is ready.
