Speaking at a recent industry event, Leap Wireless CEO Doug Hutcheson said the company plans to deploy Long Term Evolution starting in 2011, but won't build an entire network itself. "We are not focused on doing it ourselves," Hutcheson said. "There are alternatives out there that operate within our model." Similar to the way Leap rival MetroPCS is deploying LTE, Leap will use LTE to "enhance" its existing 3G network. Leap will launch its own LTE "hotspots" in select markets where it has the spectrum, but is looking to companies such as Clearwire and Lightsquared to purchase wholesale access rather than built out an LTE network across the country. Leap plans to add LTE coverage slowly between 2011 and 2013.

Well, not to be a nitpicker--

--but what 3G network is MetroPCS enhancing? I know they've got 3G in Michigan somewhere. But where else do they have 3G? Definitely not in Florida.
1X is 3G spec whether you want to agree with it or not.

BETTER IDEA

Since Leap does not have the stones to build out why not sell out to Metro and get it out of the way?
