Broadcom Agrees to Acquire Beceem
Broadcom today announced its intent to acquire Beceem for approximately $316 million in cash. Beceem is a privately held company that makes and markets WiMax and Long Term Evolution equipment. It recently announced a new multi-mode platform that supports both the WiMax and LTE standards. The acquisition will allow Broadcom to bring 4G technology and products to market sooner. Broadcom now offers a wide range of 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS chips and solutions for hardware makers and network operators.
Broadcom to Cut Up to 1,900 Jobs
Broadcom Limited said it plans to reduce its headcount by about 1,900 jobs. The cuts will be made across Broadcom's global facilities and the company expects to take a charge of $650 million to cover the cost of the cuts.
Avago to Buy Broadcom for $37 Billion
Avago Technologies today said it plans to acquire Broadcom for $37 billion. Avago is offering Broadcom's shareholders $17 billion in cash and $20 billion in Avago stock.

Caltech has filed a lawsuit against Broadcom and Apple and alleges the two firms are using its patented technology without permission. The patents in question, granted to Caltech between 2006 and 2012, cover 802.11n and 802.11ac WiFi technologies, which improve transmission speeds and reduce the hardware needed for WiFi radios.
