AT&T recently announced that it is going to be adopting new standards for its packaging and handset designs to reduce waste, encourage recycling and reduce its carbon footprint. AT&T is working with manufacturers to reduce the amount of packaging that goes into its handset boxes, and reduce the size of the boxes themselves. By switching materials from plastic to recycled paper, AT&T estimates it will use 60% less paper and 30% less plastic in its packaging. It will also begin printing materials using non-petroleum-based inks. AT&T is requiring handset makers to adopt new, stricter standards when it comes to phone design. From now on, AT&T will require all suppliers to reduce packaging, use non-petroleum based inks and use recycled materials for in-box documentation. Seventy-five percent of new devices will have to be at least 65 percent recyclable. AT&T also noted that the majority of new devices will comply with the GSMA Universal Charging Solution, which mandates a more energy-efficient charger for new devices. AT&T will also require handsets to comply with European Unions’ Restriction of Hazardous Substances mandate. This law places restrictions on the use of lead, mercury, and other hazardous materials used in electronic equipment. AT&T believes these changes will have a positive impact on the environment.

I'm green...with disgust

It's cool to recycle, don't get me wrong. However, using the term "carbon footprint" implies that AT&T is following the sheep (or are they really a Shepard?) with the whole man-made "climate change" scandal. What does this mean? AT&T will release even cheaper quality phones, sky-rocket prices (just like the rest of the "green" industry biggots), and probably charge some eco-recycling tax - and maybe even choose to charge you if you choose plastic over paper when you buy a new phone or accessory (if they begin offering paper bags). It's fine to be eco-friendly...but it's a problem if you start getting charged more from it. Yeah, they have not done anything on the price scale...YET. It's coming though...I can guarantee that. The other carriers...

No, I'm sure T-Mo will follow suit then Verizon will be last but all of their advertising will say that they were the first ones to do it.

also, anytime someone talks about reducing waste and pollution, you say it's a bad thing. Global warming or not, it's a GOOD THING!

or ship the jobs overseas, to avert the impossible to avoid fines the green initiative will create.
It is imperative that strict lines be drawn between the two, they're not the same thing.

I, for one, don't give much credibility to the whole carbon DIoxide movement. Yeah, it absorbs infrared radiation a bit faster then other gases, but the real...

True Motives

The only 'Green' AT&T cares about is the money they will make from this cheap marketing ploy. They think that by claiming to be green they will attract more customers. They are going to brag about it and toot their own horn, in reality they could care less about the environment. If it were legal and would drive more business, they would dump toxic waste into streams.

Same with Sprint.

Hypocrites. I work for Sprint and have worked for AT&T. The amount of paper wasted is nauseating. Just yesterday I was told to throw away a trash can full of brochures because the new ones had a better picture on front. Take that times 5000 stores that Sprint has, and it makes you wonder how many trees that took - just to make a new brochure with t...

Yup. It is exactly that. Like every other company ("green" Windex...seriously?). They use this movement as a marketing ploy to pull in all the ignoramuses that are blind enough to follow and believe the hoopla...result: more money for big corporations...

They've gotta start somewhere.

Money vs. Nature

I'm not afraid of running out of money. I am afraid of running out of resources.

These initiatives stretch our resources, and that I am in favor of.

Also if they choose to spin this, who cares. I'm smart enough to know whats going on. Plus it gives marketers (people) jobs.

Its all good.
that's nice...well the rest of the world has to worry about running out of money. So, it's not "all good"

People will bash

I guarantee despite this post that someone will attempt to bash AT&T's attempt at going green.
