The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and other regulators have suggest that all states across the country install bans against texting while driving. The NHTSA has provided states that don't already ban such behavior with a basic framework that can be used on which to build their own, specific laws. The NHTSA suggests that drivers caught typing on a handheld device while driving should face a fine of at least $75 in addition to possible actions to hinder their driving privileges. If a someone is injuried and/or killed in an accident caused by a texting driver, the NHTSA believes charges should be escalated to a felony. "Texting while driving, like talking on cell phones while driving, is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening practice," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. Nineteen states already have bans against texting and or using mobile devices while driving. The NHTSA thinks by providing this legal framework, it could help some states adopt bans faster.
