The GSMA today announced the launch of a commercial pilot program for their OneAPI initiative. The Canadian market, including carriers Bell Mobility, Rogers Communications and TELUS, will be the first to benefit from the GSMA's OneAPI program. OneAPI provides a common, lightweight and web-friendly set of APIs for easy access to a mobile operator's network capabilities. Initially, the OneAPI initiative will focus on payment, messaging and location services. The payment APIs should allow developers to use a customer's existing carrier billing for mobile payments, instead of requiring a separate credit card, for instance. The GSMA hopes that OneAPI will make mobile development more attractive, as developers won't have to create different apps to access the variety of messaging, location discovery and billing methods and APIs currently in use across the range of carriers. Specifications for the GSMA's OneAPI initiative are in the process of being adopted by the Open Mobile Alliance, as well, according to the Association.
