Qualcomm Announces New FLO Air Interface

Today Qualcomm announced FLO-EV, a new air interface for its mobile TV service. FLO-EV mostly offers under-the-hood improvements to the way live TV media is delivered to handsets. One of the improvements is a 3-5 dB improvement in performance with the same spectral efficiency. This alone should allow network operators deploying FLO services to see a 30 to 50% reduction in deployment costs. Qualcomm believes that FLO-EV will be adopted by international markets first, but says that current FLO TV deployments — such as those by AT&T and Verizon Wireless — can upgrade to the new system.
