AT&T Airs Attack Ad of Its Own

Article Comments  100+

Nov 18, 2009, 7:49 PM   by Eric M. Zeman

Today AT&T aired a 3G comparison commercial in response to the attack ads that Verizon Wireless has been showing. The ad claims that AT&T has the nation's fastest 3G network, that it lets users talk and surf at the same time, that it offers the most popular smartphones, and that it offers over 100,000 apps. The end of the ad spot says, "AT&T, A Better 3G Experience" in text. AT&T was recently denied a request to prevent Verizon from showing its anti-AT&T attack ads.

FAIL!!!

This ad fail in so many ways!!!

-Fastest Nation 3G? HaHaHa! its a miracle it even works!!!! they should brag about their edge instead!

-Talk & Text at the same time?? who the heck cares

-Popular smartphones? yea right, well....maybe one only.

-100,000 apps??? and not even 1/3rd of them people use.

Good Luck AT&T. Verizon can actually sue you guys for misleading with "Fastest 3G" lol. Time to spend some money and not be throwing lies like u always do.

Remember?? More bar in more places? Fewest drop calls? all those ads were lies!
Their 3G network does work incredibly fast where it works, and for me and most people it does cover them. Nearly all other places I have ever gone, more of their phones offer WiFi than Verizon.

And it's not Talk and Text simultaneously, it's talk ...

New AT&T Luke Wilson Commercial

AT&T has a new Luke Wilson commercial which I believe is very effective. The commercial details AT&T's coverage (not merely 3G) of 97% of the population of the U.S. Since AT&T claims Verizon's 3G commercials imply no coverage in non 3G areas this may be the way they should have responded to those commercials in the first place.

Actually...

...a pretty classy rebuttal considering Verizon got nasty from the very start.

And because I could care less if both carriers went up in smoke, it's good to see AT&T fight back.
Not fighting good enough. It is a competition to get money? How can they not get nasty? That is the way the world is dear?

How coverage is reported:

When a wireless carrier wants to impress investors they don't really talk about square miles of coverage. They report how many millions of population their footprint covers. This is why T-Mobile's, Sprint's, AT&T's and Verizon's coverage will work for the vast majority of consumers.
Showing a map of coverage that is painted red, green, orange or blue is great marketing but not as relevant as how many people live or work within the footprint.
It is possible for a carier to have more square miles of coverage and cover less of the population.
Consumers need to learn who is best in their local market where it is relevant to their needs.
In this case AT&T's 3G covers a good percentage of the population if you look at where they have covera...

In Black and White

What has happened here is AT&T has put too much relliance on the IPhone, people are more mobile now, we all travel way mmore than we used to, and being able to work just at your home location isnt going to cut it anymore. The one thing that verizon did well was expand, aquiring and posting new towers like nuts AT&T did not grow quite as much, so while it might be a great service in cities and some other places....I will ALWAYS go with the service that works over the largest area for both calling and data which is verizon, reliability is way more important then trendy gadgets to me, because when i drive from my house to florida for disney, and it doesnt work when i get a flat to make a phone call...will i really give a crap if it has th...

LAME...and I even like AT&T...

I actually like being an AT&T customer...but come on...a better 3G experience? The commercials are misleading, but their not completely wrong either. AT&T shouldn't be claiming a better 3G network. Maybe a better data network overall (and that's debatable), but 3G? If I venture out of a major city, I'm on edge...and although that is 2.5G, it's not HSPA.
While I'm on 3G, I agree, this is a lame commercial.

If anything, AT&T should be showing that the iPhone can do Twitter/Google Maps everywhere from NYC to LA and all parts of the boonies in between (fishing on a lake) even with EDGE.
...
exactly. The commericals aren't really misleading you just have to look at the fine print and pay attention to it. Dealing with customers I would say that it is a true statment. AT&T can not compete with Verizon's network. AT&T took it the wrong way a...

so conflicted with these companies. they are at each other's throats. trying to see who is the best, or whatever. how bout you stop the contracts and the crazy monthly prices.... and with that extra money you will bring in from customers switching to you you can add more coverage and bam. your the best. you have more coverage, your faster, and you have more customers! damn i'm good.

Let's review their points for a second...

Nations Fastest 3G Network: Ok, given the ideal situations, yes, their speed is the fastest. However, that speed only exists in like Chicago, and it's INCREDIBLY unreliable. The rest of their coverage around the country is slower than Sprint or Verizon. So on a whole, that's a bunch of malarkey.

Talk and surf at the same time: True, BUT only when you're in their 3G coverage. EDGE (which is the vast majority of this coverage) is not able to do this. AND that's not something that AT&T does, it's something GSM does. So they also just gave a shout out to T-Mobile on that one too (though they'll never tell you that. If you ask them, they'll probably pull an Apple and say they invented it).

Most popular smartphones: Again, yes, they technica...

AT&T vs Verizon who loses?

Us the customers, that is who, both companies should save their money they spend on these ads and put it to better use, such as improving their networks, I don't care who you think has the better one, both of them could always be better.
Companies are going to spend money on advertisements.

Nov 18, 2009, 9:17 PM

good job at?t !

instead of adding more cell sites, they rather burn the money with lame commercials! smart move att!
Ads and lawsuits are cheaper than pumping money into building out areas where they would prefer not to build 3G in the first place. Clearly they are already covering seventy-five percent of the U.S. and that is all they care to.
...
att added about 2000 cell sites in 2009 and are spending almost 18 billion this year on imporvements and expansions to the network.

att still has over 2000 more cell sites than it's leading competitor verizon.

AT&T is really pissed at Verizon

http://www.att.com/truthabout3g/ » »

They have bogus statements on their site such as:

"Only AT&T has the fastest 3G network, Verizon doesn't."

"AT&T has the most popular smartphones, Verizon doesn't"

"With AT&T you can talk and browse the web at the same time, you can't do that with Verizon"

"AT&T gives you access to more than 100,000 apps, that's way more than Verizon"

And if you click on a statement it doesn't show you any info beyond AT&T's statement.

What a load of crap. I know you are pissed, AT&T, but geez, this is PATHETIC

You know what this website says:

"OMG, we are losing our iPhone exclusivity next year, we better make ourselves look good"

You can't polish a terd, honey.

To be honest...

That's a dirty move pulled by AT&T... AND I WORK FOR THE COMPANY!!!

Typically... AT&T doesn't squabble over these incidents. The geekboys/fanboys do it for them! You know what AT&T sees? a 800,000 subscriber increase over Verizon in Q3 2009. Numbers don't lie. It doesn't matter what drove them, whether it was iPhone sales, rate plan pricing, my mother holding guns up to peoples head forcing them to buy the product... NUMBERS NEVER LIE!

The following info is from a mulitude of sites, I also, to the best of my ability, verified the numbers by looking up both AT&T and VZW's End of Quarter Conference Call documents. = )

Q3 2009 - AT&T adds 2 million subscribers. Verizon adds 1.2 million subscribers.

Q2 2009 - AT&T adds 1.4 mi...

Unbelievable!

I'm surprised that this carrier's management team can even spell AT&T!

They must be the remnnants of Sprint's old management team.

Next AT&T will compare their 3G coverage to Cricket just to validate any argument.

For Now

At&t Is not Going to win with its service. They gotta do something with their pricing. In this economy people are going to flock to them. The commercials were weak but i do have at&t due to their data and GSM phones. they should be attacking verizons ETFs.
VZW doesn't have higher ETFs do they? $175 vs $??

The $60.00 unlimited Go Phone should probably do some damage though.
