Today Synaptics announced two new touch sensors meant for mobile devices. The 1000 series is a capacitive touch screen that supports single touch. It is meant to bring the power of touch user interfaces to lower-cost handsets and is compatible with the user interfaces designed for many of today's resistive touch screens. The 3000 series supports multi-touch, up to 10 fingers / points of input at once. This will allow handset makers to design and implement new touch gestures that can be used to interact with mobile devices, such as crumpling or multi-player gaming. The 3000 series has a full image sensor with a refresh rate of 60Hz (60 times per second) to detect touch input and motion on the display. The sensor can be as large as 8 inches (diagonal), and because it has no borders, hardware designers can extend the screen nearly to the edge of the device. The new displays will be sampling later this year, and Synaptics expects to see handsets using 1000 and 3000 touch sensors by late 2009 or early 2010.
