Sprint's Hesse: Pre Shortages Likely

Article Comments  100+

May 19, 2009, 4:14 PM   by Eric M. Zeman

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said that there is a high likelihood that there will be shortages of the Palm Pre. He said, "We don't intend to advertise [the Pre] heavily early on because we think we are going to have shortages for a while. We won't be able to keep up with demand for the device in the early period of time." Hesse didn't elaborate on how long the shortages would last. The device becomes available on June 6 for $200 after $100 mail-in rebate.

Oh jeez, you're going to sell all 10 of them?

I mean seriously. First off, the only people who are going to run out and buy a Pre are people who currently are held hostage on Sprint's network, which isn't a lot. Nobody's going to drop AT&T/Verizon/TMo for a network with worse coverage and places dead last in reliability.

So that means all of those loyal Sprint customers who haven't ditched Sprint for their savior device now get to deal with shortages for the ONE promising phone on their network.

Second off, unless he missed the memo, Apple's kinda likely announcing a new iPhone in about 3 days from the Pre's release date, so we're talking about a phone that's already one generation obsolete. So you're telling me Sprint's supply chain management is so poor they can't keep a remotel...

While I may not be a 'fanboy', and Sprint isn't adding customers, they have been rated as the most reliable 3G network, and they have roaming with VZW. I'm not one for either iPhone (good UI, overly crippled) or Pre (CDMA locked - doesn't have the ap...

Sure dan

Probably from the sheer amount of exchanges due to defective equipment and freezing crap palm OS.
Palms software never had a freezing issue. it was windows Mobile on the palm devices. I have a palm centro and the palm OS and it freezes like once or twice a month thats it.
...
What defective equipment? For the record, it is Winmo that freezes not PalmOS. OH 😲 guess what??... The Pre is not running PalmOS, it is running webOS, Palms new operating system which replaces PalmOS. Get your head out of the sand. 😉
First off, as other have said, the majority of Palm phones with software problems are the Windows Mobile phones. Second, it is completely unrealistic to expect a smartphone to never freeze. Granted it should not be excessive, but once or twice a month...

I'll be selling mine on E-bay.

Palm Pre $299.99
Activation Fee $35
One Month of service $70
Termination Fee $200

The extra money I make after paying the $600 and taking the profit to pay my Verizon bill Priceless!

Dont Bash Sprint..Did you forget about all the problems the Iphone had when launched

I know you rememember all the netowork and activation issues the iphone 3g had when launched...come on. Also stores were sold out everwhere..thus causing a shortage. The pre is going to be a big demand so a shortage is almost inevitable.

Video Recorder?

Does anybody know if the phone will have a video recorder?
At this time, video recorder is not on the phone, but palm is looking to release an update later on this year for the video recorder to work.

Line like the Iphone/halo release?

Can anyone see a line backed up like the Iphone or the Halo video games? That would bring the attention that sprint needs. But then because its a new phone, the other carriers will pay media outlets and critics to expose the glitches and draw the attention to the glitches of the phone rather then the pro's to keep sprint from really getting a benifit. so thats what sprint better be worried about is fighting the press and critics
i doubt it will have lines like the iphone or halo...those things are ridiculous...people sleeping outside for days...i def dont see that....maybe 10 or 20 people as appose to 10's of thousands that sleep outside for halo and the iphone
Look at it this way, on the day Sprints Samsung Instinct launched there were lines (more than 10, 20 people), the Palm Pre is a Goliath compared to the Instinct. I know of a lot iphone owners who say the iphone is a good device, but they are fed up w...

The quickest way to stir up a buying frenzy...

...is to announce that there will be a shortage.

And people fall for it year in and year out.

and then they wonder why companies don't make sure their item is bug free pre launch. what is better than paying beta testers?
So... are you hating??? because if it were your company and you were in the same boat, wouldnt u do the samething?
...
it's up to the people if they'll for for it..
for all we know it might be true..
While I agree this is a marketing strategy, I disagree about the beta comment. The Pre has been in beta testing for several months, the numerous public sittings of the Pre is a pretty good indication. There were reports that some celebrities had a u...

So What!

So what there will be shortages, I'm sure there will be for the first month or so. Every carrier has shortages of hot phones.

This is one heck of a nice phone, and I wish Palm and Sprint well with it. I also have no intention of getting it nor using Sprint. But I also feel, the more good stuff coming out and the more Sprint is a viable, the better it is for all of us. So I say, Good Luck to both!

It's already got a lot of attention

Celebrities already have a Palm Pre, which there are pictures every where. On top of that there was a very sucessful key note.

Tech sites are already raving about it, and word-of-mouth is spreading like wild fire.

A lot of people didn't think the Blackberry Storm woudln't be a smash (I'm a BB fan and I didn't like it) but it did sell a million very quickly and had a pretty big line.

Despite lack of advertising (which The Pre showed up in their lastest commercial)I think the phone will be smashing success.

We already have people lining up asking if we are gonna carry it.
i've had customers asking for it for a couple of months already..
