Today RIM formally launched version 5.0 of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Most of the new features of the server are enterprise-related, but a number of them will be reflected by new capabilities of RIM's BlackBerry handsets. They include behind-the-firewall read/write access to Windows documents; email flagging; manipulate server-based email folders directly from the handset; view and forward calendar/meeting request attachments; better management of personal and public distribution lists; and overall better integration with the desktop features of Outlook, Lotus Domino and other enterprise email software. Businesses can upgrade to 5.0 starting today. RIM also announced a new push API for BlackBerry developers that will enable them to create real-time push content for BlackBerries. The BlackBerry push API will enable mobile applications to deliver real-time content and updates, including news, weather, banking, medical, IT services applications and games. The API is available to BlackBerry Alliance Program members
