Sony Ericsson Summer 2005

Intro W600 1 W600 2 Z520 Accessories Comments  28

Report from the launch of the new Sony Ericsson W600 and Z520. Hands-on report and photos from the launch event in New York City.

Today in New York and other cities around the world, Sony Ericsson introduced a handful of new phones. Most of the basic info was leaked a few weeks ago, although the rumor mills didn't quite nail the specs.

The new additions to the lineup include the company's second Walkman phone, and first quad-band phone, both for the U.S. market. Those hoping for the company's next smartphone or a 3G phone for the U.S. were disappointed, but overall, the new arrivals seem to be well-rounded models with extra features that will appeal to many.

The two new models for the U.S. are the W600 (left) and Z520 (right).

The W600 is a swivel-style model, and Sony Ericsson's first Walkman model for the U.S. In an unusual twist, those of us in the States get the better model, and Europe gets a trimmed-down version, in the form of the S600. (Although the lucky Europeans do have the snazzy W800.)

The Z520 is a solid update to the Z500 currently released with Cingular. The big news here is the addition of both quad-band GSM roaming and Bluetooth.

I don't know about anybody else, but both of these new Sony Ericsson's are AWESOME! πŸ™‚ 😁
I want both of them...I wonder what the price will be for them.
i want the music phone. the orange cover is soo sexy. i love it.

supposedly the list price for the W600 is going to be around $250 for the no commitment price, which is decent since you can buy a S710 for that WITH a 2 year contract. supposedly they are supposed to be released in the beginning of the fourth quarter...

wasnt happy with the z500

Hmm I wonder if they took the complaints of the z500 into consideration because it seems like they did. Bigger screen larger keypad and bluetooth. I hated my z500 and sold it. maybe they recoognized the problem and fixed it. But sony ericsson has lost my buisness. time to go on to bigger and better things like the razr
I don't know if you were referring to the internal or external screen but if you were referring to the internal screen (which is the one people have complained about) it is not any larger than on the z500. It is the same exact size, but it has been u...

The RAZR is pure garbage, as are all Motorolas (with the exception of the V551). Having worked for Cingular Wireless for the last 6 months in Tech Support, I've seen this phone returned more times than any other.

z500 issues/ z520 or Nokia 6101

I like my z500 with a few exceptions, one of which might be a SE issue in general.

My z500 and old T616 have had a problem of picking up a lot of background noise. When I'm using my phone on the highway, people say it sounds like I'm in a tornado b/c my phone picks up all the wind and stuff in the background. The T616 had the SAME problem. Nokias and Motos have not picked up this background noise in my car though.

The keys, as many have mentioned, are kinda hard to press. Also, the battery lasts a couple hours longer than nothing, and I don't take pics on it, I don't play games, all I do is use it for talking.

I hope SE fixes the background noise problem, the keys look a little more raised on the z520, and I hope the battery l...

Rich...size?

Rich, was the overall size of the z520 similar to that of the z500 or was it noticeably smaller or larger? From the pictures it was hard to tell relative size from anything else.

Thanks. πŸ™‚
I spent some considerable time trying to track down a Z500 at the event so I could take a comparison shot for just that reason! πŸ˜‰ Alas - there were no Z500s at the event. ☹️

There are comparison shots, though. The Z520 next to the W600:

Okay, as promised, I just added a side-by-side shot to the first page that includes the Z520 and S710. The Z520 is pretty small.
