eCall Spec Finalized by 3GPP, Endorsed by Qualcomm

The 3GPP recently announced the finalization of a new specification that is meant to provide additional safety services to automobile passengers in Europe. The eCall initiative covers a new modem that will automatically dial emergency services and transmit location information in the event of an accident. The standard was requested by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute and the European Union expects to deploy this technology in automobiles by late 2010. Though Qualcomm approved of the standard, it doesn't necessarily mean that the technology will come to the U.S., but it is a possibility.

so... OnStar?

GM's vehicles can already do this, so is this basically just a formalized standard for everyone to use?
